Internships/Work Experience

Hiya guys, I was just wondering about work experience when it comes to ECs. I worked once as a sous chef in a local restaurant before I went to a music camp when I was a rising Sophomore, and I'm doing a 6-week internship at a non-profit org. before I head off to Columbia University for their infamous summer programs. I've been told that work experience is generally good to have, but just how important is it. Also, do I have to have a employer recommendation to show for the work?

Thanks.

It is considered an EC and will be looked at the same as other EC’s. They will look to see leadership, initiative, commitment, passion, the depth you pursue that and related activities. It is important if you did it. It is not important if you don’t have work experience at all and just did other things.

You won’t have employers as a reference usually. I can only see doing that if it was long term employment and you thought the employer could add something that your recommenders at school couldn’t, in regard to character and competencies, for instance.
