Internships

I was thinking of being an intern at a small psychiatrist's office in my town to possibly foster an interest in that field. I don't think they've had any high school interns, only college students. How would I go about asking them for an internship opportunity?

It’s good that you’re interested in getting an internship. Internships are fun, rewarding and educational. To start, I would call them, ask them if they offer internship opportunities and if they do, set up an appointment. I interned at a Veterinary hospital this year, and it was hard to get. I had to call about 3-4 places before one actually contacted me. Show interest and have a fresh mind. I don’t know too much about what psychiatrists do on a daily basis, so don’t get slammed when all you’re doing is making copies, or taking out the trash. At my internship, I swept floors, took out the trash, cleaned and flip the operation table, disposed a uterus, cleaned dental equipment and so on. Go ahead and call them, shoot them an E-mail stating you name, grade, age, phone number, E-mail address, why you want to work with them, etc. It doesn’t have to be a resume, but you can submit one if you like. Good Luck, I hope you get the internship.

Make sure you advise them of your age. Psychiatrists work with a people in all stages of their lives and many issues are confidential, so don’t be surprised if the responses are “no”. They typically have college interns who need to have supervised hours in a practice. You may not get a chance to see what goes on in a session because it is so confidential, but you may be doing office work.
