I'm a 16 year old sophomore in high school with a serious lack of extracurricular activities.

I'm planning on going into the finance field when I go to college, and I'd like to start getting some experience in that area. I live around a medium sized city with a prominent financial district downtown. I'd really like to get an unpaid (paid is better, but I don't care) at some sort of investment firm downtown.

Do firms ever give 16-year-olds internships? If they do offer internships, how would I go about applying for one, would I email the company, or fill out an actual application?

Have any of you guys done something similar?

I plan to intern at Veterinary Hospitals, and the only thing I can do now is to call around and ask if they accept students. I got 2 so far. The very first thing is to research a place you have in mind, and give them a call to see if they accept interns. I’m going through the same thing as you. PM if you have any questions or concerns.

When you say student, do you mean high school student? What grade are you in?

I’m a junior interested in finance too. Unfortunately, as high schoolers, our options are extremely limited. I’ve contacted two firms/companies about internships and neither of them allowed high schoolers to be interns. Right now I’m doing the electronic equivalent of knocking on all the doors of companies that I’m interested in. To be honest, I don’t think I will get an internship, and not because I’m not qualified, simply because none are available. I suggest you contact (email) them and simply say you’re interested in an internship, and possibly attach a resume. If the firm you’re interested has a formal application process follow that instead. On the brighter side, colleges don’t expect high school students to have experience in finance because there are so few options to express interest in finance available.

Good luck with your internship search. What kind of information do you include on your resume if you’ve never had a job, no relevant experience, etc.? Would you basically put the same things you put on a college application: GPA, class rank, awards, ECs, etc.

Google high school resume template, but yea, it’s like a very concise college app. Have your parents help you out, chances are they’ve made a resume before.
