How can I successfully acquire an internship? Preferably at a well known company. I live in Southern California, so I have relatively a short distance to a few big corporations. Also, how can I get a paid internship as a high schooler? Any tips from successful interns?

I mostly want to do this to put some career experience on my college apps.

Since you’re in high school, aim for prestigious volunteer programs.

Paid internships are going to be energy impossible unless you already have an outstanding resume because you’ll be competing against college kids with outstanding resumes. Most places don’t allow high schoolers to apply either.

Be open to an unpaid internship, lots of valuable experience (if you select one that will offer such) and you’ll have a much better shot. Try local not-for-profits around your area that interest you.

Also, for paid internships, college student/applicants look look into and apply in late fall/early spring semesters. Keep that in mind as summer is already in full swing and most summer internships at larger, well know corporations/companies have already put interns to work.

That was very helpful. I know that most places don’t take on high school interns for pay, but I thought it was worth asking. I’m pretty busy this summer already, so I was looking for a fall internship anyway. Thanks for the detailed advice!
