Internships?

People on this forum are always talking about doing internships during the summer. What kind of internships are available for high school juniors, and how do I find them? Also, what sort of work would I be expected to be able to perform?

It's too late to apply, but JPL was offering an internship for high schoolers over this summer. Most companies offer internships, just find one close to you.

If you're interested in research, you can either email professors directly (I'm not experienced with this) or look at their department websites for any programs that are specifically for high school students.

I'm not really into any of the sciences, so I'm not terribly keen on research. Is it possible to assist professors in other departments on research, like economics or history?

I have checked out the websites for many of the companies in my area. None off them specify actually having internships. Should I just email them inquiring about whether they have internships for high school students?

Yes, contacting them directly is a good idea.

What kind of work would I be expected to do? I'm assuming it's basic tasks that a secretary would perform, especially for a high school student.

Last summer I interned at a civil engineering firm. For the first while I did basic secretary-type tasks; filing, invoicing, drafting letters to send to clients, inventory of office supply shelves, etc. Later they gave me some basic engineering-related work that they normally give to university interns; I'd look at building grades plans, transfer comments between plans, and eventually did a noise study on a new community.

Basically, the work will vary. Initially it may be a little boring, but if you can show them you are willing and able to learn, eventually your employer may give you more challenging tasks.

Anyone have a sample internship-request letter (like to a professor at a college)?
