Interntaional Transfer Admission

Hey everybody,

I am a first year undergraduate student at University College London with a module at London School of Economics. Im looking forward to transferring to a university in the US for mechanical engineering. Following are my current grades:

Modelling & Analysis (Math): A
Applied Mechanics: A
Materials and Mechanics of Deformable bodies (split into chemistry and mechanics): A
Applied Electricity: A
Computing(Fortran and Matlab): A
Engineering Drawing: B
Economics (taught at LSE): not graded, they donot have midterm tests

I have shortlisted the following unis:

Brown
Cornell
Harvey Mudd
Northwestern
UPenn
USC
UC Berkeley
Wisconsin-Madison
Maryland
Michigan-Ann Arbor
UIUC

My high school was British Patterned
A-Levels (equivelent to APs, iv heard): A,A,A,B (5,5,5,4?)

Lots of ECs in highschool but no such involvement in college exept for attedning meetings (which really wont count)

I only have a B in engineering drawing. Im not sure if its something that important in the US.

There are no midterm tests in LSE but I can get an A Grade if tested anyday and my tutor will be willing to write a really good evaluation for me.

I was wondering if anybody could chance me at the previously mentioned schools?
Also, I emailed all of these universities to ask for transferable credit but they said that this would only be done after I am admitted. Can anyone enrolled in the mechanical engineering course in these unis help tell me if Il get enough credit for sophomore standing?

Thank you so much to anyone who can help!

Just a note on Chancing. It is a dubious activity to start with, becomes more so for Intl. students, more so for transfers and finally more so for majors like Engineering where usually a college within the university must accept you.

In addition, at some publics, like UCB, Engineering majors are impacted and very difficult to enter, particularly as a transfer:

[Prospective Transfer FAQ — UC Berkeley College of Engineering](http://coe.berkeley.edu/students/prospective-students/admissions/transfer-faq.html)

I see what you mean entomom.
Can anyone who has trasnfered from Uk share some experience? I have not given any SATs and nor do i plan to. My question is, are they really that important for international tranfers?

I see alot of transfer students who have a GPA of 4.0 from community colleges. Mine is obviously less than a 4.0. Does transferring from a top university (UCL and LSE are very well known in the UK) following a rigorous course make up for this?

You can not apply to many of these schools without an SAT score, so yes, they are important.

We really would need to understand more about your high school rank to see if you have a chance at these schools. Since you’ve had less than a year of college, high school is still most important.

It’s unlikely that you would get soph standing as the systems are so different. At most schools you would have many requirements in subjects other than engineering to complete. I would anticipate spending 4 years at most of these schools. The state schools are more likely to give you generous credits from classes completed.

I’d take Berkeley off your list as they don’t accept soph transfers. The first 5 schools on your list will be tough, the rest, if you’re full pay, shouldn’t be a problem.

I plan to pay full

My position in highschool was 5/90. My school was small and very selective.

Deputy President- Youth Leadership initiative society ( a very imporant position). Won outstanding diplomacy awards at 2 national MUNS. Head Peer teacher at school. Won 1 local science fair and was runnerup at another one. Started and managed a football league in my hometown which actually flourished and still remains as the only league for school going children even years after i left my city. Runner-up at a business idea competition with participating schools from across the country. Was actively involved at a charity organizations. The founder of that organization would love to write an evaluation for me.

Plus i did internships at very large manufacturing firms (i kno this dosnt sound very interesting but i can make a big deal out of it :p)

I did check the requirement for sophomore transfer at some unis and i did meet most of them. I am actually doing the same things (exept for computing where im doing fortran instead of java) plus some extra stuff in my first year.
