Interpreting a Division 3 College Coach's response?

I have been corresponding with a certain Division 3 tennis for the past 2 weeks. After sending my introductory email with my athletic and academic stats, his reply was

"Hi *******

Thank you for your interest in ******* Yes I would definitely like to get a copy of your transcript and test scores. Also, a video would be helpful so if you can send that along as well, that would be great.

Please let me know if there are any questions I can answer for you about ****** and talk to you soon!

Coach *****"

After I send my video a couple days later, the response was as follows

"Hi *********

Thanks for the info and the video. Let's keep in touch and please let me know if you have any questions.

Coach ******"

How interested do you guys think the coach is? How would I continue the early stages of the""recruiting"" process and what other good questions should I ask?

Thanks

I assume you are a junior.

You appear to have received a good response so far. the fact that the coach reviewed your video within 2 days is a good sign.

I would continue the early stages by emailing the coach your competition schedule for this spring and summer. I would also keep him updated about your grades, any awards you have won, and major wins. I would ask him what GPA and test scores are needed for his program. If this school is one of your top choices I would try to arrange an unofficial visit in which you tour the school and talk to the coach.

It sounds positive so far. For tennis I would want to make sure my junior year unweighted gpa and SAT/ACT scores are at least in the top 50% of all admitted students for the schools you are looking at.

Right now it sounds like you have put yourself on their radar which is just what you needed to do right about now. Keep the coach updated. Right now the pool of candidates is very large for D3. They have a lot of kids poking around and introducing themselves. The coach doesn’t know where yet you will fall in that pool of kids who are seriously interested in his school; neither do you really know all of your choices yet. You may be introducing yourself to 20 coaches for all this coach knows (and yes you should be introducing yourself around to up to that many coaches! - all with your gpa scores and video link).

Pay attention to how quickly or enthusiastically they get back to you.

If you haven’t already - start a notebook with a page for each college where you can write down the dates and details of all your contacts. Some will start to emerge as being more interested in you than others; other schools might not be as interested. Keep everyone updated with what you are doing with your sport. This summer you’ll start to see the bigger picture as to where you fall in the recruiting game.

GL

Separate question, and interpretation requested. D3 recruit, submitted grades and sat scores. How long until there is a response from coach? Told 2-3 weeks. Is that common?

Not a problem at all at this stage of the game. It’s still very early for D3.

PML
Now is the time of year that coaches from selective colleges ask their athletic recruits to submit transcripts and test scores to admissions for an academic pre-read. This process generally takes from 2 weeks to a month to complete. Academic pre-reads are very common for selective colleges.

Swimkids Dad -

While this is in progress, should the recruit hear from coach? My student althete all but said would apply ED to coach if supported, coach said support was there, sent on paperwork.

Now, the waiting is terrible.

Not sure whether any of the D3 schools being referred to in this thread are NESCAC schools, but I believe NESCAC coaches can not go to admissions for pretends before July 1st of the summer between junior and senior year in high school. Not positive if this is a conf rule, but we were told this was the timing by multiple coaches in the conference.

“Pretends” should be “prereads” in the prior post. (Autocorrect problem.)

PML

Unless there is a problem I would not expect to hear anything from the coach while the pre-read is in progress. If the coach has not given an indication of the results of the pre-read after 3 weeks I would have your D call him.
