I had requested an alumni interview with a top 25 school and we had agreed to do a phone interview due to transportation issues.

I totally forgot about it at the time, the interviewer e-mailed me an hour later asking what was up, I asked if I could call then. The interviewer said no. I asked if there was any other time we could do it. They said had scheduled their day around it and that they were very busy. That they were irritated, that I gave no explanation. They said that at this point they did not think they could give an objective evaluation and said best wishes in the future.

That was friday, what should I do?

I would hope that by now you have emailed a sincere apology or put one in the mail, if you have a mailing address. If you don’t have an address, contact the school to request one. (Just say you had an interview scheduled and need an email address for the interviewer. Don’t explain the whole story.)

Is an interview required or recommended for this school, or is it just optional? Is it evaluative? If you think it’s very important to get an interview to boost your chances at this school, then and only then, I’d suggest you call the admissions office to see whether it’s still possible to schedule an interview and explain what happened with this one.

Although that was a major faux pas you made being so careless, it is very harsh on him to take it so personally. Contact the admission office and ask if you can have another interviewer. You will have to apologize for the mistake. Copy and paste the comment he gave you about not being able to be objective. I’m not sure alumni that are that rigid should be doing interviews. You may or may not get another chance.

The interview was optional, you could request one.

I did just to make sure I showed “demonstrated interest.” But no I do think I need the interview to boost my chances. I just don’t want them sending a report back to the admissions office saying that I missed the interview and they thought I should not be admitted.

I will write an apology and send it in the mail.

Is there anything else I should do? Let the admissions office know? ask for another interviewer? just let it slide?
