Interview Next Week: Pointers?

So, next Friday I'm visiting W&M for a tour and then an interview at 2:00 PM. Having never had an interview before, I'm not really sure what I should doing for prep.

So, I have a few questions.

1.What should I wear? I should have a little time before the interview to change my clothes after the tour.
2.Should I have my own questions to ask? What kind?
3.What kind of questions will they ask me?

I just need a few pointers.

you will find this helpful

[William & Mary - Interview Tips](http://www.wm.edu/admission/undergraduateadmission/multiculturalstudents/applicationresources/interviewtips/index.php)

for your own questions, you should ask about W&M. Maybe… “how do you like the food?” or “what do you do for fun?” or “how do you like the professors?” stuff like that.

They will ask questions to try to get to know you. What you do in your free time, hobbies, etc. They want to find out what you will bring to W&M.

Think about what kind of contribution you could make to W & M as a student - interviewers always ask about this. Be prepared for some slightly wacky questions - they asked my d “what kind of animal would you want to be?” These questions obviously don’t have “right” answers. I think the interviewers are looking for bright, articulate, thoughtful people with a sense of humor.

My d brought a list of questions into the interview with her, though she said she only referred to it a few times. The freshman seminar is a good topic to ask about - you could ask what the interviewer took, how they liked it, etc. Student life is another good topic (housing, clubs, sports, workload). My d prepped on the website a bit before her interview so she wouldn’t ask very obvious questions, like “how many students go here?” and “is W & M a public school?”

On what to wear - I think clean and casual-plus-one is good. You want to look as if you care about this opportunity to impress W & M. But I personally don’t think it’s necessary to dress as you would for a job interview. I think my d wore a khaki skirt (maybe it was denim?), short sleeved button-down shirt, and flats.

Good luck!!!

I just had my interview last week! I wore a sun dress and a little sweater from the Gap, which seemed find. Most people had on khaki pants or a nice skirt. Just look nice, no need to go overboard.

They ask if you have any questions at the end, and I just asked what the social life was like and if she had an pointers on the admissions process.

As for questions they ask you, since they have no idea who you are and what your grades/scores/activities are like, they’re mostly about you as a person. They ask A LOT about your high school, such as your favorite/least favorite class, teacher, etc, so be prepared to talk a lot about high school in general, what activities you do and what you do for fun. They also asked what type of music you listen to and stuff like that.

It really wasn’t that bad, just be honest and be yourself, it’ll be fine!

Oh, thanks guys. This helps a lot.

BTW, what do I do with my parents while I’m in the interview? xD

Your parents can wait in the admissions lobby - it doesn’t take all that long, and your interviewer will probably come out to the lobby with you afterwards and ask your parents if they have any questions.

Then you can go to Aromas for a nice dessert! :)

Ah, okay. How long are they usually? Do they take up a whole hour?

I think my daughter’s interview took about half an hour - maybe slightly less.

Ah, okay. That’s not bad. Well, this sounds like it will be okay.

Thanks for the help guys. =3

UPDATE

Thanks for the help guys. The interview went great. It was more like a conversation than anything else. =3

I can’t wait to apply. ^-^

Glad to hear it went well. Best of luck with your application - put lots of effort into those essays, they can really help!
