Interesting. His father Richard went to Stanford for undergrad, as did Jonathan, so there’s a long family history at Stanford.
This point doesn’t relate at all to Jonathan’s job as GSB dean, but Richard and his daughter Sarah are both notable critics of college sports. Richard was not particularly a friend of Yale athletics when he was president, and Sarah wrote a book with William Bowen that was not too friendly towards college sports. Those are not uncommon views among academics though of course.
It is interesting that Yale has two Presidents in a row who did their undergrad at Stanford.
Yes, same for the current dean of Yale College. On the other hand, it has been a long time since Stanford has had one of its alums as Stanford president - I think not since Donald Tresidder in the 1940s.
I assume this is just how things have played out and not an intentional outcome, but it’s definitely a different approach than HYP where for the most part the president will either be an undergrad or grad alum (the current Harvard president is not, but then women could not attend Harvard College in her age group, and she is the first non alumni president since the 1600s).
