Is suit and tie appropriate/expected attire for an on-campus interview at University of Rochester?

It is actually a little inappropriate as a lot of the office was office casual when I went.

It is always appropriate. It is not expected. Clean & neat (or “office casual”) is fine.

I think a guy would feel more comfortable in some nice khakis and a nice shirt or sweater.

I’d say wear anything comfortable, including shorts or jeans, and try not to smell bad. They’re interested in the kid as person and applicant. They also live in the college environment and know that kids live in sweat pants, t-shirts, jeans, etc.

This is way late but overall I would never suggest someone interview in shorts. While a sports coat and tie are not necessary, a nice shirt, clean slacks and some type of jacket if cold is good. It is easy to roll up sleeves to be more casual, you can never make sweat pants look more dressed. Err on the side of being conservative.

BTW, my son interviewed away from the campus wearing a sport coat and tie.

My kid wore pants and a button down shirt. No tie and no sportcoat. It was August and too hot anyways. Turns out my kid was dressed almost exactly the same as the interviewer. I think that is the key for most interviews, dress the same or slightly better than those who are interviewing you.

Good luck.
