Just scheduled my interview for Thursday. I just wanted to know how important the interviews are for Columbia in the admissions process.
And also, for people that have already had theirs, how are they? What kind of questions do they ask, how long do they go? etc.

I cannot comment on how important they are.

Considering the place of the interview in admissions, I don’t know if I should call it a “conversation,” but I think that the intent is to simulate one. My interviewer asked me (among other things) about my high school, reasons for considering Columbia, favorite books, movies, and what I think about the construction project in NYC’s Ground Zero. I asked him about his time at Columbia. It lasted about an hour.

I had literally nothing in common with my interviewer other than Columbia and my interview still went fine. Be prepared to talk about the Core, NYC, your life, and just be all around normal. You’ll be fine.

Apparently the interviews are randomized, since they don’t always have enough alumni to interview you. Therefore the interviews cannot make/break your application unless you say something totally stupid.

Although written with Brown in mind, its info is applicable for Columbia
