Interview

Probing?! Care to share?

I had an interview in July, which went pretty well. I could answer all the questions well because almost all of them were about my extracurriculars. My interviewer was nice but i got the feeling she wasn’t too impressed. Oh, well.
And as far as ruining your chances at Yale with a bad interview: Yes, it can happen. But as was said before, these interviews aren’t a huge deal. As with almost anything in your application, it won’t make or break you. Use it as a learning experience and hopefully your other interviews will go more smoothly!

Hmm…
What would your friends say you are like?
What do they not know about you?
What might an application not convey about you?
What is a book character that you identify with?

I don’t remember all of them.

I hope it went well!!! :(

I had my interview on extremely short notice, I’m talking, logged onto the appointment book friday morning, saw a slot open, made an appointment, and did my interview on monday.

I was waay over dressed for it based on what everyone else was wearing. I got to the admissions office 1.5 hrs early so i sat in on this student forum they were having where a bunch of prospective students got to ask questions to two yale seniors (two really cool guys) about life at yale and whatnot. After sitting through an hour of them gushing about how amazing yale is, i wanted to go even more!! After the forum i had my interview with another yale senior.

He opened up by asking me some generic quesitons about what i do, what kind of school i go to and things of that nature. Then i started talking about clubs i was in and mentioned i started one and that led into another discussion. So it was very unstructured. The guy was really chill and we connected on a couple of things. Then i got to ask him some questions about yale life and his experiences and the interview was over. Seriously, an hour has never gone by so quickly in my life! It was really relaxed, u guys, don’t stress!! I just hope i didn’t come off too desperate to him. hehe. I hope this helps…

Just make sure you use a part of your interview to highlight the social aspect of your life. My interviewer explicitly told me that the admissions office doesn’t want people who are going to be coped up in their room studying all the time. So maybe mention some fun activities with friends that DONT relate to academic things, my Harvard interview similarly showed excitement when I mentioned that I had friends and a social life.

I got lost on the way there and showed up 15 minutes late :expressionless: I called ahead and asked for directions from where I was. O god I thought I was dead but they were actually way nice about it. After sprinting up Hillhouse or whatever that street is, I bursted in flustered and apologized profusely to the secretary but she was way nice. My interviewer… meh. He made the conversation proceed at an awkwardly fast rate, but luckily they gave me my whole half hour. I had a lot of adrenaline in my system so I hope they don’t think I’m too much of a spazz.

I was suprised about how many of his questions came straight out of the common app essay section.

I think we might have had the same interviewer.^^^

I figured I would sum up my interview here for reference (if you want to read in detail, I also just posted it in the 2014 SCEA hopefuls thread) but basically I had a really chill, funny and warm interviewer, and our interview was SWEET. Super relaxed, lots of laughing.
He started off asking me about my school and didn’t have many more questions because it ended up being a very smooth, natural conversation. We had a lot in common!
He did ask me about any recent book I read and what it was about!
And I learned some fantastic new details about how great Yale is, so overall, it was super fun and very, very relaxed. Great stuff! He also told me I woke him up because I was so enthusiastic, because some kids can be very shy and quiet.

So if you have an on-campus interview soon, don’t sweat it! Be relaxed, friendly and confident; they want to learn about you, and of course, you’re the expert about that :]
I think I might have been a little too bubbly, I was enjoying it so much!

I saw you at the interview. I remember reading your post in RD INTERVIEW STICKY and i heard ur name “demi” called

OMG really?! Haha wait, I might have seen you then!!! Who are you? Or what were you wearing?

I forgot to mention, my interviewer also asked me what my ideal room mate would be like, for those of you who are still prepping for their interviews.
