Interviews- How are we contacted?

I applied to Brown RD, and I still haven’t received an alumni interview request. I’m an international student, so I thought that it was possible there were no alumni interviewers in my area. However, some of my classmates received an email request for an interview a couple of days ago.

Is the delay normal? Would I be requested for an interview? Was there anything wrong with my application? Or, are interviews sorted based on last name?

It’s a limited number – thus not everyone gets interviewed. At this late date, expect no interview. You don’t request it – the interviewer will reach out to you if one is to come (email, text, phone call).

In general, they are randomly assigned. It’s possible that Brown pre-sorts them but I wouldn’t know. Harvard seems to do that with some international applicants.

@T26E4 My classmates were offered interviews from Brown at this late date though… Are Brown interviews different in the sense that they aren’t offered to all students? In the messages my classmates received (and told me about), they said that the interviewer included “Congratulations on getting selected to be interviewed for Brown University’s Class of 2020!”

Brown is not different. They simply don’t have the numbers of volunteers to interview everyone. That quote means nothing.

I have no idea why they said that. It is not an achievement to be interviewed by Brown University. The school tries to interview every applicant and does not prioritize applicants in any way. The only sorting is by geographic area, and then some of those areas will sort by things because interviewers request it (e.g. “I’m a black person and I want to interview black applicants” or “I’m a doctor and I want to interview kids interested in science.”) I imagine the vast majority of interviewers express no such preferences. Certainly nothing about your chances of admission is factored into who interviews you or when you’re interviewed.

If your friends only got the request a couple days ago, it’s possible that your area only got interviewers a few days ago and they have the punctual people assigned to them whereas you have a slower person assigned to you.

Thanks for clearing that up! I heard the interview reports are due on February 15th though…so I probably won’t be offered a chance to get an interview.

Deadline might be different for internationals and they often go beyond the deadline.

I actually just got an email last night that the deadline had been extended.

@iwannabe_Brown Thanks for letting me know! I haven’t been contacted by any alumni for an interview though

double check your spam folder and contact admissions letting them know you haven’t been contacted for an interview.

Just got contacted! Thank you!
