Wat are some questions the interviewer will ask?

Search the forum for old threads, there are tons. There is no way to predetermine what questions your interviewer will ask but you can find some generalized answers. Usually the questions are things that you don’t have to think about too much to answer though. Ones to think about beforehand are ones like ‘what do you want to be when you grow up’ type ones ,‘why did you choose XYZ school’ and other why questions. It’s also good to make a re-cap of all the things you want to mention so you don’t forget anything.

Definitely - do a search for “interview” in the forum. I know there was a really good list posted at one point, because my family used it! (To do the search, go to “search” at the top of the page, and then make sure you click on “advanced search,” which will give you a way to limit the search to “prep school admissions” only. Otherwise you’ll get stuff from the college threads that won’t be too helpful.)

just answer truthfully and honestly, be yourself. however, do try to prepare to answer these kind of questions (which usually take a while to come up with an answer):

tell me about yourself.
why do you want to go to boarding school? (especially if ur intl’ applicant)
why/how did you choose/find out about XXX school?
what are some books you have read/what are your favorite books/authors? <– this one is hard to answer if you don’t do some prep

they will also ask what other schools you applied for. also keep in mind they will have a short interview/talk with your parents as well, so make sure your parents are a little bit prepared ^_^

oh and make sure you prepare some of your own questions too! this is a great chance to show them that you really want to go to their school. you can write your questions down on a piece of paper/notebook if you’re afraid that you might forget them. (bringing a notebook might show them that you’re well prepared and serious.)

good luck =)

are you doing the interview at the school, or on skype/phone? (for skype/phone interview, there’s a lot more you would want to be prepared for)

Thanks a lot… I am going to be interviewed at a school

oh, then that’s easier. there won’t be any technical difficulties. just make sure you dress nicely to give a good first impression.

I was wondering if anyone knows whether the school informs the alumni and school representatives about the admission of his/her interviewees.

Not sure if this is also true to others - for the two schools that admitted me, I had just one parent going with me (one with Mom and the other with my Dad), and for the rest, both of them went. The school may think the family overly zealous if both parents show up.

I personally had some really crazy questions…

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and why?

Why would you want to leave your family and come to a boarding school?

If your teachers were in the room instead of you , what would they say about you?

Whats makes you stand out from all of the other applicants?

On the otherhand, my partner felt like if we both did NOT show up that it might appear as if we were divided. He was very sensitive about the schools he was unable to tour.

I don’t think it is a make/break either way. If both parents can go, I think that is great. I am sure AOs see SO many different situations. Heck, we saw families with grandma and younger sibs in tow!

@hootoo: I doubt that having both parents has a negative impact. And as for seeming “overly zealous”, I think school WANT you to be into them. We were 2 for 3 in this app season, and my wife and I attended all visits/interviews. If at all possible, I can’t see why both parents would not want to see the schools together…

Be prepared to ask your interviewer some INTELLIGENT questions about the school, and not just some generic questions that would easily have been addressed by looking at the school’s website/literature.

If you come across as totally unknowlegible about the school, it shows poor level of seriousness.
