interviews

are interviews required/recommended? if you are not a very good interviewer, is it even worth it to have an interview, or would it hurt you more than help?

It varies from school to school whether interviews are required, recommended or not offered. It also varies whether interviews are evaluative or informative. At schools like Haverford, you must interview if you live within 150 miles of the school or you are automatically denied. At schools like Duke, less than 1 in 5 interview and it's more out of courtesy to the applicant, but the interview has little impact on the application.

If interviews are optional and you are a very poor interview, you should avoid them, but if interviews are recommended and you are an average to above average interviewer, taking the time to interview will be seen as an expression of interest.

If the interview is recommended or required, then the important thing is to have it. If you don't, then it will really hurt you that you weren't interested enough in the school. Schools track the amount of interest that you show in the school using your social security number. Interviews are given by two kinds of people, admission officers and alumni volunteers. If you live far from the school and they can not find a volunteer alumni in your area to give the interview, then the fact that you did not have the interview will not be held against you.

thanks for your help
