Int'l Studies/Environmental Studies??

So I'm a possible transfer and I'm looking more in depth at the majors at Wes... I'm interested in IR or ES, and Wes doesn't have either (although they do have the certificate programs which I'd prob do). I'm just wondering what major anyone who's interested in IR/ES chose at Wesleyan. I'm thinking about not applying now, since it would be a big trek over from CA, and if it doesn't have exactly what I want to study...? help, please?

Well, our goverment major has a focus on international politics as an option, so I imagine people interested in IR would do that. And I'd guess that Eart & Enviormental science would be good for someone interested in ES...maybe with a double in Science in Society?

International Relations is definitely something that Wesleyan has-- just not as a separate major. Within the Government department, you can concentrate in International Politics. And there's also the Certificate.

Environmental Studies is something Wesleyan doesn't have a particularly good program in. The Earth & Environmental Science department is essentially rebranded Geology, with a few ecology classes thrown in. It requires tons of work in Geology. The Certificate is a good thing, I suppose, but I know someone who transferred OUT of Wes because ze wanted to do Environmental Studies, not geology.

However, I do know someone doing a Biology major with a focus on Environmental Science, and she is also getting the certificate. She's pretty happy with the course selection. This semester she somehow managed to be taking four classes with "Environment" or "Environmental" in the course title (ranging from econ to bio :P), and none of them had to do with geology. So, it's possible.

As for IR, like others said, again, you're able to concentrate within the Government major and also get a Certificate (which is like a minor). Again, people I know who've done this have been pretty satisfied.
