intro to organic chem, or just orgo chem?

Hello,

I'm a CC student taking classes at the Berkeley Extension, and I was wondering if any of you students had experience with the Intro to Organic Chemistry course? Or any intro to orgo chem course, where you took it doesn't matter. Does taking the Intro course count as the first semester of the organic chemistry year, or does it count for nothing?

Thanks in advance :)

According to [Chemistry courses - UC Berkeley Extension](http://extension.berkeley.edu/catalog/chemistry.html) , they do not have course numbers starting with XB, so they are not equivalent to actual Berkeley courses.

Why not take a course at your CC that articulates to the desired organic chemistry course, according to [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) ?

Oh, you’re totally right. The only reason I’m taking classes at the extension is because I got a cruddy registration date at the CC, so of course all the science classes were gone by the time I got in. Guess I’ll have to take it elsewhere.

In your experience however, do you find most people taking intro to orgo chem classes (anywhere) and then orgo chem, or do they switch into orgo chem ii…I’m just unclear on the sequence of classes, and the Berkeley Chemistry Dept. didn’t seem to say anything.

The usual Berkeley chemistry sequence for biology majors and pre-meds is:

1A+, 3A, 3B, upper division MCB biochemistry course (with associated labs)

The usual Berkeley chemistry sequence for chemistry and chemical engineering majors is:

4A+, 4B+, 112A, 112B (with associated labs; chemical engineering majors do not need 112B)

The extension courses appear to be for a post-bacc pre-med program, and follow a fairly typical sequence:

X19A+, X19B+, X36A, X36B (with associated labs)

= general chemistry courses

= organic chemistry courses

The extension courses above may be usable if you want to do pre-med, but do not need chemistry for your major (but then you want to check with medical schools). If you need chemistry for your major, take CC courses that articulate to the needed courses. Taking CC courses avoids the issue of having units from a 4-year school when you need to stay under a unit limit for transfer admission purposes.

The extension courses listed as “introduction”, X16 and X18, are probably for non-majors.
