Introduction to Environmental Studies -- Undergraduate And Interdisciplinary Studies

Introduction to Environmental Studies -- Undergraduate And Interdisciplinary Studies C12::::: what exactly is this class...it says it fulfills breadth for biological sciences and philosoophy and values... but the thing is there's like space for like 12 ppl in the lecture and 2 ppl in the discussions. What kinda class is like that? Any quick help would be appreciated, i'm on my phase 2 appointment right now.
Thanks

The class has only 12 people since the class is cross referenced (same class just has multiple titles) with ESPM C12, of which most people sign up for instead of UGIS C12. I wanted to sign up for the class but had a conflict. A main reason why I wanted to take it was because the class is co-taught with Robert Haas who won the Pulitzer prize in poetry. I know its a bad reason, but how many people can say they took a class taught by a Pulitzer Prize winning author.

oh icic… thanks a lot, i guess i’ll stick with this class then  … oh but whats the point of cross-listing/making this class, when there is ESPM C12?.. Does it make a difference if my transcript says I took UGIS C12 instead of ESPM C12?

I think it is preference. Like for MEB major they want you to take ESPM C12 and not English C77 even though it’s the same class and to reserve seats for certain people for example English C77 reserves some seats for English majors while ESPM C12 doesn’t. The class is taught by a science and English professor so it wouldn’t be fair to just name it ESPM C12 or English C12. If it is for breath and not your major than I doubt it would matter, which you signed up for…best the one with open seats since its getting very full.

Yeah, thats the thing, right now, i’m MCB, but im thinking of doing a minor in Conservation and Resource Studies and they require ESPM C12… so would UGIS C12 be okay?

okay… hmmmmm i was also wondering what is the difficulty of this course… is it really hard or really easy or in between?

Hmm this is pretty serious and I’m afraid of giving you bad info. So I guess MEB has a new adviser and I would recommend you email her. CNR has a good reputation for returning emails back quickly, but seeing as your busy you can try to call them.

I miss you Marjorie =(

I took English C77 in Fall '07 and it fulfills my S&E requirement for ESPM C12. You’ll be fine with UGIS C12 since it’s the exact same course, you may just need to run it by your advisor to confirm that he/she is aware that it’s the same course.

By the way, this was one of my favorite classes at Cal in no small part due to the excellent teaching by Sposito and Hass. Taking a course because it’s taught by a Pulitzer Prize-winning professor may be a bad reason, but not if he’s also a charismatic personality and great lecturer. :)

I thought it was pretty easy, but I’m also majoring in English and S&E partly because of this class so you should probably take whatever I say with a grain of salt.
