I know that this question has been asked a bunch of times, but I begin applying to colleges soon so it’d be nice to get a definitive answer. Do BB or botiques mostly recruit from Dyson or is it possible to major in econ and still be able to receive an offer? Also which one do you think prepares you (ie. better analytical skills) for future Wall Street jobs? (post-analyst)
I know that they recruit for many majors because my D was neither Dyson or an Econ. major. She was actually
ILR with an IT minor. She now works at a BB and seems to love her job.
Whatever your major, take challenging courses and get good grades. My D took several stat, Econ and computer programming courses. They also like to see well rounded students. Be involved in some extracurriculars.
Good luck.
I know a history major who graduated and easily got a job in IB. While Dyson may give you the quickest route to finance, Wall Street looks for the brightest thinkers who find ways to differentiate themselves.
One thing to keep in mind is many of those firms require 3.5 GPA to interview. If you are in Dyson then your GPA may need to be higher and interviews may be tougher. I know plenty of students (my kids’ friends) outside of AEM who got jobs in finance - Hotel, Engineering, A&S, ILR. Recruiting on campus is also not limited to AEM students.
I went to another Ivy but my three friends who went to be analysts/consultants majored in Chinese, History and PoliSci. They had good quant skills for sure but none were Econ majors.
