investment banking & GPA

I’m transferring from George Mason to Illinois-Urbana Champaign and majoring in Accounting. Does a 3.5GPA at Illinois have a chance at IB? IB don’t really recruit at Illinois :(

I went to UO in last summer,It seems like unless I transfer to better school or apply a good mba after graduate or I could hardly find a job in the ibank, right?

My first year was extremely rough academically, so I’d probably be better off getting a non i-banking job after graduating and trying to break into i-banking after MBA right?

I would advise against getting an MBA without real world experience. The best schools in the country won’t even consider people straight out of undergraduate, and you would get into far better schools after five to seven years of experience. MBA programs are very unlike masters programs in more academic disciplines: you are learning how to be a business leader in a fast paced global market. Even if you do go to business school right out of undergrad, you will finish with credentials that exceed your experience, making you a major liability for any companies. You would have paid nearly $100,000 and sacrificed two years, but you would be a greater liability to companies than you are now, since that MBA generally commands a greater salary. The result is that you will find it more difficult to get employment to match where you are in life.

Having a rough first year doesn’t mean much. It may keep you out of places like Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Credit Suisse, etc., but it will not keep you out of anywhere else if you are academically strong and get experience the rest of the way.
