investment banks care about transcript, really?

I'm a junior economics major at a top 25 school. I have done two internships so far for the same fortune 500 company: finance and internal consulting.

I have a good resume--I have leadership roles, experience, a 3.5 gpa, and I attend a good school. My one flaw is my transcript.....

I have taken accounting classes at community college, I have taken a few courses pass/fail, and I have taken a lot of my "tougher" classes outside of the school that I attend--I took them at a neighboring public school.

Is this going to be a problem when I am looking for an internship for next summer?

Yes, of course that could be a red flag. What is the point of even having gone to your college if you took so many classes outside of the school?

Likely not, I don’t think most of them really look at your transcript much at all other than a confirmation you aren’t lying about GPA. If you can get the interview, it won’t matter at all, and I am pretty sure most places don’t scrutinize transcripts, they just look at resume and GPA.

Thats not true at all for investment banks. They do indeed request and analyze your transcripts.

That is what I was hoping for. I go there because I want a degree from a prestigious school…

Yes, it really is. Most banks really do not scrutinize transcripts, they mostly care about GPA and resume to determine whether you get an interview. Once you get the interview, transcript really doesn’t matter in most cases.

A lot of banks don’t even require a transcript when dropping resume anyway.

A quote from hmom5, who hires for an ibank.

So, what are these situations you speak of that they do not look at transcripts? I’m honestly wondering because she is not the only one who I’ve heard this from. I’ve heard several times that ibanks, more so than any business, scrutinize transcripts.

I do not have personal experience but when I asked my advisers and professors what they thought about going elsewhere for certain classes they definitely recommended against it if I wanted to apply for an iBanking internship.

Not all banks recruit the same. Not all resume drops don’t involve transcript drop also other than reviewing GPA. Could it affect chances? Sure. But if you get an interview, and in it they ask about it, if you have good answers and come off strong otherwise I don’t think it will be an issue. Of course those are a lot of “ifs,” but a strong candidate could likely overcome it.

Gotcha.

However, like I said in your other thread…IF they ask for your transcript I do believe it could put you at a pretty big disadvantage. A lot of others will be applying from equally reputable and more reputable colleges and a lot of them will have completed all of their classes at said institution. While a 3.5 GPA is strong, it is not incredible, and they may feel that you should have had a higher GPA if you opted to take an easier route when taking harder classes.

Like I said, I don’t have personal experience (at iBanks), but I’m just thinking as any employer looking to hire would think. Someone with a 3.3 from your school with equal ECs and experience who took all their classes at your school will have a leg up.

it depends on the firm. some ask for transcript as part of the application, and i know i saw some of my interviewers sifting through it. on the other had, at some banks i was never even asked for a transcript until after i had the offer.

I agree for the most part with both of you. I’m not disagreeing that if they look it could put him at a disadvantage… but a lot of firms don’t look until after an offer like Birdman said.

thanks for the replies thus far. Anyone else have an opinion?

How many classes have you taken outside of your college?

Edit: Also what courses were they?

Well my school requires that I take a certain amount of my upper-level economics classes there, so by the time I graduate I will have taken 5 economics classes (3 upper-level) outside of my home institution. In addition to this I will have taken 2 accounting classes at other schools.

Basically half of my econ and accounting classes will be from another institution. Also one of the accounting classes I took was pass/fail.

I took Financial Accounting at CC.
I took Managerial Accounting at my school (pass/fail).
I took both intro to econ classes and 3 upper level classes at a different school.
I took intermediate accounting at my school
I took cost accounting at my school.

What kind of “Top 25” are we talking about btw?

18-25…

What school?

Yeah, hate to pry but it matters.

lol why does it matter?

I really would prefer not to give that much information out if I don’t have to…
