Investment Style?

For those who invest in the stock market or on a virtual stock exhange, what criterias do you use in picking companies to invest in? What documents do you analyze? Do you invest for immediate gains or for the long-term?

theres so many investment styles, best way to learn is go to message board, in yahoo message board you actually learn quite a bit. Usually when you go to a stock on yahoo you go to the message board and people on there will post why they got in n w/e you'll learn along the way. Theres also a lot of penny stock pumpers on message board so just be careful

I've actually read all pages on the "Chart School" icon of the stock chart website, I make it imperative to read Businessweek, WSJ, Thestreet, watch CNBC and learn at least one new thing about finance every single day. I don't really invest in the stock market yet(just dabble on a virtual portfolio with the possibility of running an actual mutual fund; some people might know what I'm talking about:)) and if I do, it wouldn't be in penny stocks so I don't have to worry about a "pump and dump". I started the thread as a forum of discussion for those interested in investing and hopefully learn something I don't already know or better methods of investing.

i'm investing in a bunch of foreign index funds, china;s fund gave a 40% return last year, so did the singapore fund.

EDIT: besically, index funds in developing countries.

I also used to hedge options, but that's rather quantitative balancing than investing.

I worry about the stability(or should I say unstability) of foreign markets so I tend to stay away from currencies on ForEX and securities of foreign entities.

Maybe when I become more of an expert.

rule 1 : never invest money you cant lose

Being an econ guy and not a business guy, I'm much more comfortable with foreign bonds and commodities. If I want in on equity, I just buy index funds. Buying shares of individual companies just seems odd to me, unless:

a) you've got enough money to buy significant voting power; or
b) you've got access to inside information.

penny stocks are cool if you have little money cuz a) you lose all your money or b) or double it or triple it in one day =D

benefit of investing in companies is you can kind of predict whats gonna happen next

the reason I invest in index funds of china, brazil, australia, singapore, thailand, south africa is because i have some contacts to high authorities in those countries for inside information.

I agree with you completely nauru, i would feel weird investing 10,000 dollars just in Dell or Apple.

Wow. How'd you get those type of contacts, Untilted?

...um insider trading, SEC, martha stewart...

have you ever seen the movie wall street?

What business major hasn't?

I just bought some OXGN options high risk weee either a) i lose ~$800 or b) i make $20k

yeah I'm with you. I put in some spare cash a few months ago just for the fun of it. Lost 25% the first day, made 100% the next week, then lost 50%... you got to love the volatility and the adrenaline rush that comes with it :P

sounds like you were trading subpennies scorpion

yeah, i had one hurricane stock (ecci), and the rest were pretty much subpennies. (bhub, lsmj, mume, and more. now I'm in gbdx and lets see where that goes)

lsmj daamn when'd you get in

some of these investment "styles" aren't styles at all. They are simply gambling, with no theoretical basis whatsoever...

got in at .0008, after the first run. I figured that the bhub thing killed it, and so i was got out at .0004, and went in mume for 50% gain. It wasn't one of my better trades lol.
