Invitation from two honors societies.

So I had pretty nice GPA so far(3.71, not sure if it’s good for med school?) , and gotten an invitation from two honors societies.

First one is Omega Chi Epsilon, a “premier chemical engineering honor society”. The fee is 60$, and I know that tutors from OXE help engineering students.

Second one is Phi Sigma Pi, a National Honor Fraternity. I have no clues about this.

Can someone tell me if it’s worth to be in either or both societies?

Thanks

Also wondering about Phi Sigma Pi, myself. ItS GPA requirement, at least at my school is only a 3.0 which seems too low for it to be meaningful, in my opinion…

Probably not if you have to pay for them

I’m in Phi Sigma Pi at Cornell University!!!

We hold a lot of really awesome events – some of them are for ourselves and some are for the Cornell/Ithaca community. We basically combine the best aspects of a social and a professional fraternity. This is SUPER cheesy but PSP is really like a family. You won’t just go to the events, you’ll hang out with the other Brothers all the time, whether it’s just getting lunch or studying or having sleepovers or traveling to another country for spring break. It also gives me a variety of different kinds of events to go to each week, which is a really nice break from my classes. For example, and I just scrolled to a random week in my calendar last semester, one week the events we had were a Jimmy Fallon game night, Ivy Room dinner, writing letters to alumni, getting to spend a couple hours talking to the new initiate class, volunteering downtown at the Learning Web, and our semester retreat (which was to a lake house)! . I met my best friends through PSP and it has really transformed my entire college experience.

Please let me know (either OP or @elliebham or anyone else) if you have any questions about it!

Thank you @Ranza123! And you have to pay dues for every society I can think of, so I don’t think that’s really valid @iubaccounting

Okay, please don’t hijack my thread.

@MYOS1634 or @GMTplus7 ?

Who is hijacking your thread?

OXE is worth it for Chemical Engineers. Phi Sigma Pi I’d wait and see.

I would check to see how active the honor society is on your campus. Do they have regular events that you would be interested in. If they do and you plan on attending and being an active member then it might be worth joining. If you are just are joining to have something to list on your resume then it would be a waste of money.

A lot of these honor societies are essentially just a Who’s Who list. Pay a fee, get on the list, that’s it. Make sure to look deeper into them. The ChemE one sounds like it could be useful for recruiting after graduation.

I agree with @mandalorian that most honor societies just put you on a list after you pay a fee, and I ignore most invitations. But I can guarantee that Phi Sigma Pi is a real organization!
