Hi Everyone,
So a friend of mine(current sophomore) told me that he got an invitation from Stanford to go finish school at The Thatcher School, and if he maintained a 3.9 GPA, then he would attend Stanford for 2020…
The basis for why he got the invitation is because he apparently got a perfect score on the PSAT. I know he’s a bit on the smarter side, but I know he’s not a once in a generation genius.
I’m not one that usually puts down someone’s achievements, but I’m really sceptical if he actually got this invitation. To my knowledge, the CollegeBoard doesn’t send PSAT scores or SAT scores to colleges. Perhaps he sent in his own scores to Stanford? Even then, I know for a fact that Stanford doesn’t accept everyone with a perfect score on the SAT.
What is happening here? Is he bluffing? Is he just trying to get attention? Or is this actually the case? Hope you guys can help clear this up for me.
Thanks
My S got a perfect score on the PSAT and he does not receive such an invitation so I don’t think his invitation is based on his PSAT score. It might be something else
Is he an athlete? I’m just speculating, but if he is really exceptional, a coach may have told him what his transcript would need to look like to be recruited. A 3.9 from Thacher is probably a pretty high bar, but that’s not a different issue. In any case, not quite the story he told you but a plausible variant…
@gardenstategal no, he’s not an athlete. Even then, the admissions process for athletes is considerably different from the scenario I described above. Also, something I didn’t seem to mention earlier, he’s not a student at Thatchers right now. It seems like he’s saying that Stanford is guaranteeing admissions to both Stanford AND Thatcher(who I believe has no affiliation to Stanford)The more I think about it, the more I doubt his “story”.
“The more I think about it, the more I doubt his ‘story’.”
I agree. This looks fishy to me also.
speaking of taking courses at the Stanford, a friend of S took 3 college entry level courses there last summer, may be it does help increase chances to get into Stanford?
your friend has a great imagination.
@newHSmom Speaking of Stanford summer courses, I actually met him through a Stanford summer course this summer. The Stanford summer courses don’t really increase chances, they pretty much just fulfil credit and provides for a great experience. I really doubt that’s the case/
I’m just wondering if what I’m describing right here a practice that colleges do.
OP, he’s pulling your leg!
@martin0421 then I don’t see he has any advantages… Now am wondering too…
It’s likely he’s messing with you but it’s possible he got an invitation to apply to the Thacher School and as part of their marketing they mentioned that all students with a 3.9+ in the last several years that applied to Stanford were admitted. This easily becomes “I can go to the Thacher School and if I get a 3.9+ I automatically get into Stanford”.
MODERATOR’S NOTE:
No. At best, your friend is misunderstanding the invitation. At worst, well, insert your own present particple. Since there is no reason to keep this thread open to get the same responses (especially when someone already hijacked it), I’m closing.
