I'm an entering Freshman in the COE, and I want to do Pre-med, while staying in engineering, since it provides a good backup in case Med School doesn't work out. I know majoring Biomedical would be a straightforward way of getting pre-med reqs out of the way, but I heard that would be extremely difficult at Umich. Would IOE be a good engineering major to go along with pre-med?

ioe is not premed oriented at all.

BME, ChemE, and MSE are probably better choices.

I know, but I’m pretty sure IOE still leaves room for pre med reqs, I’m just wondering if it’s a good way to get in a useful engineering major while getting a good GPA for med schools.

i don’t know what types of credits you’re coming in with, but most people would have difficulty fitting in premed requirements with ioe i think. ioe courses are certainly on average easier than other engineering majors, but credit-wise it’s about the same as any other engineering major.

Do you know how hard it is to maintain a near-4.0 GPA?

that is extremely dependent on the person… it’s definitely the most feasible in IOE, though.

Cool, do you know if biology counts as intellectual breadth? If it does, I can fit in all pre-med requirements with IOE requirements. Otherwise, I’ll probably have to take summer courses for a few classes.

i don’t know offhand, i’m sure you can find it somewhere online, though. i recommend talking to some advisers about your plan – i’m pretty sure everyone you talk to will tell you not to do ioe + premed, since it just makes no sense. the fact that you’re doing something completely unrelated will likely make med school adcoms question your passion for medicine unless you can come up with a convincing reason for why you did ioe.

You think something like Econ would be a better option? The thing is I want to do engineering my first year to see if it’s something I would enjoy. I want to be able to work Pre-med courses around that.

yes, i think a major in lsa would be much wiser. speaking of econ, i have 2 siblings that both did double majors in econ & biochem then went into medicine. the thing about degrees in CoE is that they are much more structured in terms of required courses. lsa degrees give you more flexibility so that your premed courses will actually count toward degree requirements.

Would you change your answer if I told you I am willing to take 5 years to fulfill the requirements for both? It’s honestly something I’m really interested in doing.

the issue isn’t so much how long the plan would take, but rather the lack of benefit of doing ioe + premed. why do you want to study them?

The good thing about IOE is that it is very employable. Let’s say you major in IOE and at some point, whether it be during your undergraduate education or once you graduate, you decide you don’t want to go to medical school. At least you have a strong degree.

Also, IOE covers a variety of topics and opens up a variety of job opportunities. As a result, it’s unlikely that you are going to dislike everything IOE has to offer.

Exactly, those are basically the reasons for why I want to do it. I think IOE is an interesting field, and also I’m hoping to land some nice internships. 777Blue77, do you have experience with IOE? Would you say it is feasible to get a 3.5+ GPA doing IOE with Pre-med requirements?

“777Blue77, do you have experience with IOE?”

Yes, I am an IOE student. I have taken numerous IOE courses and I have also obtained an internship. If you would like to know more about my experiences, feel free to PM me.
