Hello all,
I’m applying to the Iowa Young Writers’ Studio this year, and I have a quick question about the creative writing sample that must be included in the application. Prior attendees, how did you structure your writing sample? Did you include your name and information on the first page (did you have to have a cover page)?
I don’t think you need a cover page or any formal introduction to your writing samples, but I’m asking just to be sure. Any additional information would be great!
Hi! I went to IYWS last year and it was pretty incredible! Don’t bother including a cover letter or anything- that stuff should be covered in your personal statement anyway. Describe the context of the writing if necessary (like if it’s from a larger work or whatever) but that’s all the non-prose (or poetry, if that’s your style) you should have.
Happy to answer any more questions if you have them!
I’m applying this year and I don’t have a cover page!
I’m bit confused here @lostinthesupermarket because if there is no introduction or a name then how they understand about the author?
Surprised this thread has died. Results come out April 2.
@StreenaSkywalker I thought it was March 30??
Nope pretty sure it’s April 2nd
nah, it’s 3/30. it says so on their website
The confirmation email said 4/2 but the website says 3/30…
Either way, I’m really scared for this. Looking back, I feel like my personal statement really sucked. I don’t know about my teacher recommendation. The only good part about my application was probably the writing sample (I submitted a short story that won a gold key in the Scholastic Awards)
For my sample, I submitted pieces that all got Scholastic gold/silver keys too, but IYWS probably gets a lot of those… I’m more nervous about Scholastic nationals for now…
19 hours and 10 minutes left!!!
What session(s) did you apply to?
I’ve gotten into Kenyon and Juniper, the only other 2 I’ve applied to. I hear Iowa’s more selective, though, so I’m not too high up on my chances.
Hi,
I attended the IYWS last year and loved it. The program really does live up to all the hype. If you have any questions about it, I’ll be happy to answer them. And good luck to you all!
@StreenaSkywalker same! Looking forward to meeting everyone who got in
Hey, I got into the first session, did anyone else on this thread get into session 1 also?
anyone else in Pam Zhang’s group Session 2?
