IR Major ?

Hey
How much would an IR major benefit from the co-op program ? Is this program better than juggling internships like you would do at GWU or AU ? How is NU's IR program in general ?

im not too familiar with it, but my tour guide was an IR major and he said that when he applied for his co-op him and two other guys got in and then those 2 other guys dropped out and they were very sorry about their decision because he said his co-op was amazing and he got to go abroad and stuff.

American University has one of the best international relations program in the country. I think you would benifit more from going there. I'm not just saying that either...i know people who work for the UN now because of the program.

thanks for all the input.... AU is one of my the schools i am considering and i am really interested in the SIS. I was just wondering about the NU Co-Op program.
Again thanks for the input and if you have something to say about IR or whatever just post!
thanks

Also Groen, AU has a much higher international student population. Yes NEU is great for co-op but AU is known for their IR program. You can still get great jobs/internships from AU as well. Plus you're right on embassay row...it's perfect.

yes.. that is the problem.
AU is about the best school for IR ... for me. (Georgetown is a reach and GW would make my familiy homeless..but i'm still going to apply there)

However so many people say that there is a poor social life at AU, and that the people are ...odd.

Luckily I will visit AU in the summer and will be able to judge for myself.

I don't know... my parents both went to AU and loved it but that was over 30 years ago. Things change and damn has that school gotten competitive.. I don't even think i got in I haven't recieved an e mail yet and a lot of other people already have.

au doesnt seem as competitive as NU though, i mean the # of applicants- when it comes to AU vs NU i am leaning towards NU

but GW and NU is really hard for me, im still waiting but that is where the hard decision comes...

AU accepts a smaller percent because its a smaller school and their SAT scores are way higher.

i just feel like the co-op at NU is better than the internships in DC from AU, i might be wrong, please correct me if i am... but something about the international affairs department at NU really stands out, i think its about the same for the SAT scores for NU and AU- i got into both, i think that GW is the hardest one to get into and then its still the co-op versus competitive DC internships alongside classes, im so confused.

hmm.. i think i can answer atleast one question. I think the pool is bigger at NU because they have more outstanding depts. AU has the SPS and SIS and communications. From what i hear, those are the only really outstanding depts. Then again those 3 parts of AU are world-class and probobly better in their individual fields than NU's best departments. It's not really possible to compare but it was just a thought.

More info on NU and it's IA and co-op is ever welcome !

the international affairs department's website is www.iaf.neu.edu - most of their information is on that site but I did not know how great the coop opportunities and dual major possibilities were until i attended the mini-info session on welcome day. (like econ/international business/journalism/polisci/etc.) and for the record, NU does have international relations but i do not believe it is a major... from my understanding it is a small section in polisci, international affairs is a big department and has more options for students.

and for comparing NU to AU i think it depends on what kind of "hands on" experience you like better, im sure AU has more political connections being in the heart of DC and all and its prestige, but if someone was looking at a different aspect of international affairs then NU has many co-op connections- which is the dilemma i am facing!!! also dialogue of civilizations is an awesome, AWESOME program.

Well, I'm a poli sci student at NU and from what limited experience I have with the IR and IR majors, they seem very satisfied with NU's program. I'm not going to lie, if I had to choose between GW and NU for IA, I may choose GW, but between AU and NU there's no comparison, Northeastern is the way to go, in my opinion [but then I'm biased]. As for AU being more competetive and having higher stats, that isn't true [unless whoever said that was speaking only of the IR program].

Avg Sat [last year] NU: 1260s AU: 1260s
Acceptance Rate : 41% 51%

As I said though, if it's between NU and George W. that's a tough decision, but I think you'd be happier with your decision of NU over American, for what it's worth.
