Well, in that case I have 4! ;)

Still no IRS Data Retrieval link. Just got off a chat with them and was told the link is scheduled to be available Sunday 2/5. Anyone else hear the same thing? Or has anyone actually ‘seen’ the link on their FAFSA?

Kelsmom - for those who benefit most from early filing, is the FAFSA filing date used the initial “will file” date? I think this is the case, but that would make some feel more comfortable waiting for the IRS link to complete filing.

If the “already filed” corrections date is the critical one it would make me nervous about waiting for the bugs to be worked out.

^ We received a mail from Duke today saying that they accept the first submission. This won’t do my S any favors as there is a significant difference in income and benefits between the first FAFSA submission and the second one and still waiting to do the actual one linked to IRS.

If it’s 2 weeks for electronically filed, how long will it be for paper filers? for some reason there is always some detail of our taxes that disqualifies us from efiling. (It’s not always the same every year.) If we have to file on paper as usual, I guess it won’t be worth waiting for the automatic link. Our S is a freshman now and we have a late deadline to re-apply for financial aid, though, so if we file taxes fairly soon (we have most of the needed forms now), maybe it will still make sense to wait.

Where is the damn tool? I looked for it for about 30 minutes…

Finished & submitted both the FAFSA and CSS profile yesterday. I called Vanderbilt’s FAO & asked them about using the link; the young lady who answered the phone did not know what I was talking about - they just wanted a hard copy mailed to them of our 1040s & W2s. All ds’s other college choices have priority deadlines beginning in March, so I suppose we’re in good shape.

I never saw an opportunity to use a link for the Linking Tool. When I finished the FAFSA & got my confirmation page, there was a notice, however: “…you were eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool…Once your FAFSA has been processed, you and you parent can return to “FAFSA on the Web” and use the tool to transfer tax information.” The unknowns here are how long will it take the FAFSA to be processed, and then will the link actually be up & working properly by then? I plan to check it in a couple weeks & try it out then.

Obviously this new tool has people confused! My son’s schools both require the CSS Profile as well - and one uses IDOC. They have both said we do not need to use the IRS linking tool to submit the FAFSA. I understand there is a chance our FAFSAs will be selected for verification and I will need to do something about it then - but perhaps by that time the tool will be working!

As I indicated yesterday…

“Still no IRS Data Retrieval link. Just got off a chat with them and was told the link is scheduled to be available Sunday 2/5. Anyone else hear the same thing? Or has anyone actually ‘seen’ the link on their FAFSA?”

Guess we’ll just wait and see if that’s true.

The retrieval tool will be required for FEDERAL verification, and only if your verification items include tax-return related items (this year, verification will be targeted to certain items on the FAFSA). FAFSA is the form for federal purposes.

Vanderbilt verifies every applicant, but only a portion of those applicants will also be selected by the federal processor for verification. Those students who are, and whose items selected to be verified include tax return items, will be required to either do the link or provide a tax transcript … but Vanderbilt will send verification instructions to those who fit the criteria.

As I have said before, relax. Go ahead and submit your FAFSA if you need to meet a deadline or get in line for first-come, first-served aid. You can go back and link later, when the tool is ready.

Hi Kelsmom,

Any suggestions as to why the retrieval tool did not pop up when I changed to “already filed?” I see you suggest to wait a week or two and I only waited a week.

Do we have to go in and “correct the FAFSA” again in about a week? I prefer not to make alot of corrections as I would think it would drive the folks in the financial aid offices a bit crazy!!

We have been, and always are, selected for “verification.”

Thanks!

It is supposed to be available as of 2-5 according to the FAFSA office. I asked the same question, and that is what fafsa stated. I will be interested to see when it actually works.

thanks, mum!

I was told the same thing this morning.

Anyone have any luck on the FAFSA site today?

I was was able to use the IRS link this morning to download my daughter’s 1040EZ tax return to the FAFSA website but when I try to do mine - the IRS website states that my return cannot be found. My daughter’s return was filed electronically on 1/25 and my 1040 was filed electronically on 1/16.

Where was the link exactly? Is it on the page you get after you log in where you can click to “view processed information”, or do you have to click on “Make FAFSA Corrections” link to see it? It’s still not showing up for me.

I am ready to use the link but want to make sure it is working. does anyone know?

Go to the tax section (parent or student). Click from “will file” to “already filed.” If the link is ready, you will get information about linking below the checkbox.

got it, thanks again kelsmom :)
