IRS Data Retrieval Tool & FAFSA

Well, I’m going to give it a couple more days. I filed on Feb 4th, and I see that someone else in a similar situation just got access today, when they filed the same day. I did owe money, and had a business-related return.

Guitars, seriously? Which school? You can PM me if you want. I can find out the software they use, find out how they view that message on the software … and you can call them to enlighten them! Some aid offices really make me want to go in and give them some training!!

E-filed on Feb 21st, and return was accepted by IRS the same day. I had tried a few times over the past several days but wasn’t able to get the retrieval to work. I figured I’d have to wait a few weeks like the FAFSA and IRS pages mentioned, but I was able to retrieve the information today. It’s probably just a coincidence, but the pre-filled name info on the IRS page was in all capital letters and I had always left it as is. Since it says the name/address info has to match the tax return exactly, I re-typed my name with only the first letter capitalized and it worked on the first try. I don’t know if that might have been the holdup or not, but I’m glad it’s done and over with in any case.

Does it lock out after a couple of failed tries?

It started as your information may be incorrect, and now it just doesn’t match their records.

also, can someone help me with this question:
what was the net worth of your parents’ investments, including real estate (not your parents’ home)?

My parents have real estate, and the net loss is $-17,118. The gross rental income however, is $35,039.
What should I put as net worth?

Neither of those numbers is used. Net worth of real estate is the current market value minus any mortgage owed on the property. That is not on the tax return. Your parents will have to give you that number.

having the exact same problem. IRS refund status website updated today to show my refund would be deposited in 2 days. I tried FAFSA-IRS link and it stated info doesn’t match.

I’m still having the same problem, too. I am hoping patience will pay off once the refund is deposited.

geeps, my FAFSA link didn’t work until about two weeks after Where’s my Refund showed me that my refund was coming on a certain date.

I just tried it today for the umpteenth time and it worked for our returns (yay!) but didn’t work for D’s. She filed a few days before we did and only made $1670 last year. Should I keep trying or declare defeat and “update” the number manually. But then what does my next step need to be? I just want this part of be over!!!

It’s been a week since I updated my FAFSA using the IRS Retrieval Tool but I haven’t received an email with my SAR yet. I need to add another 8 schools to the FAFSA, but am not sure whether or not I can remove the schools listed right now. From my understanding, you have to wait until the email with the SAR comes before removing it, but when I looked at my correction history, it showed that the updated FAFSA has been “processed” and my SAR/EFC did not change from the FAFSA completed without the IRS Retrieval Tool to the FAFSA completed with.

I’m thinking that because my SAR/EFC remained the same, they haven’t emailed me, but I’m not so sure…

Can anyone verify that I am safe to remove the schools currently listed and add my 8 schools?

kelsmom, I did send you a pm today. Thanks!

I was able to update my FAFSA on Saturday night, the IRS link worked fine. This is the first time I tried it. I e-filed in early February. I owed money this year, so I can’t correlate it to refund status. They were able to suck the money out of my bank account in only 2 days after I filed. Shocking efficiency. :D

None of the numbers changed because I did the FAFSA from my tax return, but it let me submit it.

Have not gotten any emails yet, not sure if I will since none of the numbers actually changed.

Mine worked yesterday, I typed the address (w/o caps) and tried it that way, and I got the 3 possible errors page, instead of the invalid answers page.

Then I tried again, and changed the name, there was actually a hyphen in my mom’s name, so that’s what got it to work.

I guess I will just file FAFSAs later tonight without using the Data Retrieval Tool. It has been over 3 weeks since I filed taxes, and it still doesn’t work. March 1st is priority deadline for the schools my kids attend, I can’t wait until the last minute, especially since there are predictions of an ice-storm in my part of the country, which might knock out the power and my internet connection! I hope I haven’t already screwed up something by waiting until only 2 days before the deadline. Do the schools use the filing date, or the date they receive the data (if for some reason it is delayed)? I’ve never waited this long before…so much for this “new and improved” way of filing!

I bailed and entered the data manually last week. When I was trying to get the tool to work, I requested an account transcript from the IRS. That arrived today, and guess what…they abbreviated my town name in TWO places, not just one as I had originally thought. This year’s FAFSAs are all filed, but I’m going to save the transcript so that I can try the new abbreviation next year.

three4three, I think the deadline is for the first FAFSA filing, even if estimated. They may have a deadline for the verification if they require it, so I guess Id call the school if not sure.

If you have questions about what the deadline means go back and check carefully and call FA if it is still unclear - my kids school does have a deadline for complete submissions, not just first filing priority or verification.

Filed FAFSAs last night without Data Retrieval Tool. All have been processed, so I know I met the deadlines! Something a little odd, though. I filed for 3 kids, and everyone’s processed information showed up with the little “h” beside the same lines for parent’s info, etc…probably because I didn’t use the Retrieval Tool? But, on a whim, I filled out a FAFSA for myself (thinking that there’s no better time than the present to finish my own bachelor’s degree), and my application shows none of the little "h"s. I also wondered why my own EFC was somewhat lower than the kids’?

I and my daughter received the email from Fafsa requesting we link my tax return with the tool. I put all the correct information in on the IRS end and it keeps saying I am entering wrong information. I filed my taxes and my Fafsa both on Feb 15th. Does anyone have any idea what the issue could be? And should I call the IRS or Fafsa to fix it?
