IRS Retrieval Tool

Have you tried using the tool? The IRS is a pretty unreliable source of information in general, they will often give worst-case or generic answers, or just plain wrong answers.

I would just try it every day or two, chances are your return will be processed long before 4/15. Don’t know if paying by check screws up the process, I paid by direct withdrawal last year.

Hi notrichenough
I scheduled my tax payment to be withdrawn on 4/15 then cancelled and paid by check when I learned that I need to pay taxes before I could use the tool. I have tried using the tool everyday without success. Hope tool works in a couple of weeks since my check was cashed 3/4.

Who knows what will happen in this case… the IRS claims that once a date has been scheduled it can’t be moved. I never thought about cancelling…

It’s been less than two weeks since your check has been cashed… they may still get to processing your return before 4/15.

How do you cancel the direct withdrawal?

I called the IRS E-file Payment & Cancelllations to cancel my direct withdrawal and sent a check out 2/26 which was cashed 3/4. I’m still unable to use the data tool today.

^ IRS did not like to do additional work you asked them to do. So now they give you a headache to “punish” you. (I am just joking here.)

I am on the same boat here – Still could not use IRS data retrieval tool. after 10 days. I blamed myself by selling some stocks last year and it makes my tax return more complicated. I speculate that if we use 1040A and made our tax return very simple, I may be able to use the data retrieval tool by now.

Even though the tax code is complicated, IRS is not happy when we file a tax return that is complicated (like including education credit.) It is even rumored that if you do not have a refund, IRS will process it after April 15. Another rumor is that the education credit may trigger some delay. (Isn’t it true some tax reporting software has some bugs for calculating the education credit earlier this year?) I do not know what to believe now.

I really hope anyone in this situation of having an extended delay of getting refund will understand the snafu described in those articles is not a rumor. As one of the 600,000 tax filers affected by this, I contacted the IRS and the person I spoke to said that when the processing of a return is delayed in this way, one cannot use the data retrieval tool or get a tax return transcript until the return is actually processed at some unknown point in the future, hopefully soon. Of course delays may be occurring for other reasons, but the delay described in these articles is not a rumor.
