is 3.9 gpa really really bad??

ok im going to be a senior this year
and i ended up with

3.93 cumulative
3.92 uc gpa
3.69 (a=4, b=3, ... scale) unweighted

yea. im extremely depressed right now... :(:(:(
my orchestra, anatomy, etc classes brought me down
andd i (stupid-me. i dont even know this will help) took
7classes freshman yr, 8 classes soph year, and 7classes(again) junior year.

my school is an "excellent :p(bs!)" public but magnet school
we only have 160 people per class.
we dont rank for that reason, and i heard that our counselors write a letter explaining why we dont rank (tougher to get good gpa, at least tougher than other pub schools)

so.. based on this info, is 3.9 really bad?
actually at my school, im doing pretty okay/well.. any opinions?

p.s.
i was aiming for ucla, usc, and ucsd(as match school)
i have decent/good ec and
i think i'll get high 2000 or low 2100 on sat..

UCLA is a reach, average fall 2006 freshman GPA is 4.13 for those attending, but probably about 4.20 for those accepted.

You are aiming for UC schools, so before you start panicking, calculate your UC GPA. The UCs have a special method for recalculating GPA. Look it up on CC using the search tool. If you're in-state, you can find your school on the UC website and it'll tell you which of your classes counts for UC honors or advanced GPA credit.

when they say 4.13, is that uc gpa or reg cumulative gpa?

i think it's a little bit easier for me to get into uc's cus
a lot of 3.7 uc gpa people got into ucsd when the avg is 4.0
so yea.. im trying to hope for some miracle :p

4.13 = UC GPA

What's cumulative GPA?

mallomarcookie:

yea i did the calculation and i got 3.92.. because they only give 8 extra points!! i took all those other hard ap classes for nothing!
i should've just taken an easy a class after my 4th weighted class :(
then i would've had higher gpa

but i think that really isnt fair. its harder for ppl to get a's in ap classes and if the classes after the 4th one dont count as weighted course, then what's the point of taking "as many APs as possible?"

whoamg:

i put it up there. i got 3.93 including freshman yr.
it's all around 3.9 i think i'll just have to go to sd :(

I mean, how is your cumulative GPA determined? What's weighted, what's not?

oh it includes every single classes i took since 9th grade
(including p.e., health, etc)
my precalc, AP lang and comp, AP bio, and APUSH and chemistry HP are weighted ones :)

Well don't worry. Even though the extra AP classes (beyond the 8-class limit) still matter. They will still consider them when they look at the difficulty of your courseload. They just won't physically enter it into your GPA recalculation. That doesn't mean they'll ignore them.

yea.. that's what i guessed.
i feel really bad for my friend who had 7 AP/weighted classes and have a low gpa. you know, it's harder to get an a in Ap class than in choir(or one of those easy a classes)
we just found out yesterday

thanks for your reply!

Considering that you've taken really hard classes and gotten a 3.9 or whatever, I'd say that you're fine. I got into lots of good schools with a 3.9, so I don't think that you're in THAT much trouble. When they look at your transcript, they look at the difficulty of the classes and then the grades that go along with those classes. Even though it won't be calculated into your GPA, they'll definitely take a good hard look at your transcript. So I really think you're fine, and before you start dooming yourself to what you consider to be a lesser school, remember that you have gotten decent grades, and you should probably have a more optimistic outlook about things because you never know what's going to happen....especially with college admissions. :)

Wow I can't belive you haven't taken your SATs yet. If you actually do get into the 2000-2100s, then that score will likely cancel out your sub-par GPA and get you into UCLA.

Still, don't be foolish: a 3.9 is by no means "really really bad." UCLA and USC are just really really hard schools to get in to. Add some safety UCs.

I'd say USC was difficult but not really really hard. I'd call Princeton or Brown (when you start getting below 20% and around 10%) really really hard.

oh i took sat and got 1930. but im not satisfied with my score so im just taking it again. haha
thanks so much for your advices!
it really encouraged me. cant wait till end of december! x)
well thanks guys!

So you though that music was easy? Take that!!! Music clases have evaluations just like other clases, but sometimes even harder. Were you absent a lot from rehearsals? If so, that takes points from your evaluation. Remember, “practice makes perfect” Did you have good grades with the clase load? It’s not like well, i’ll go to practice, sing a little and i’ll have an “A”. To get an “A” in music clases, you have to dedicate a lot of time and practice. Did you follow the teachers advise on singing techniques? Profesors don’t merely evaluate students just on talent alone, it’s hard work and dedication that truly matters, and teachers see that. You can be a gifted student, but if you are irresponsible, that will effect your final evaluation. These clases use rubrics too!!! So, don’t be fooled by the easy clase clich

Most selective colleges are going to tear your transcript apart & eliminate art, music, electives. They will look at your core classes & perhaps not necessarily recalculate your GPA, but look to see if your grades in your most rigorous classes.
