Is 4 years of math really necessary?

Hey everyone, I’m currently a sophomore in hs and I’m almost done with calc BC. This is the highest level math class at my school (with the exception of ap stats I guess) and in all honesty, I really hate math. Do I really have to continue with other random math classes like stats or calc 3 at a community college? Also is physics considered a type of math class in a college’s eyes? Kids at my school say they consider it a math… I’m curious to hear everyone else’s opinion.

Please help me lol I really don’t want to take more math classes I’d rather take classes I actually care about. Would it be that bad if I don’t take a math class jr and sr year? Instead I’d be taking more APs and duel enrollment classes.

what colleges are you thinking about? but yes it would be very bad not take math in jr and sr year, so take stats jr yer in your hs and calc 3 at the community college. Physics is not considered math, even by people like Newton, so assume adcoms will know it’s not math.

Calculus BC in 10th grade should be fine for almost every college, since the standard fourth year of math is precalculus.

Some colleges may have unusual requirements, like Washington senior year math or math using course, or UCs wanting you to have taken geometry instead of validating it with a higher course. So check colleges of interest to see if they have unusual requirements.

What subjects are you interested in now and for college?

I’m interested in NC State and UNC Chapel Hill, I’m 100% an english/art student, however I’m also interested in web design, animation/3D/2D art/other careers involving digital art and computers.

NC State and UNC Chapel Hill. I don’t think I saw any specific requirements on NC States website…

It’s not a necessity but I’d suggest you take AP Stats either your junior or senior year. It’s not a difficult AP and I think will round out your math education nicely. You still would have one ‘math free’ year in HS.

Def. don’t need to take multi-variable calc.

Good luck!!

This post makes me so sad. I would kind of like to know how a kid who hates math got to and through Calc BC in 10th grade and if you always hated math.

No, it’s not necessary. Depends on where you are applying for college and what you are pursuing to make your application better.

My kid ran out of math by 12th grade. She did take AP Stats in addition to the standard sequence, but she started on independent study in 5th grade, which is why she was a year ahead. She did have four years of math, but she took none her senior year. I would NOT say you have to go to CC if you have literally run out of math at your school. That’s ridiculous. BTW she was a likely letter recipient for STEM at Yale, where she went.

Call the colleges you are interested in and ask. We did that about Spanish III and got great answers that helped in planning S’s senior year. They were all happy to help.

In terms of your interests, you may want to eventually take CS courses leading to computer graphics (though some math courses like discrete math and linear algebra may be needed).

Statistics is good to know generally.

"how a kid who hates math got to and through Calc BC in 10th grade and if you always hated math. "

You don’t need to like something to be good at it. My D will be in Calc next year (10th) just from the school’s placing her in math classes based on her performance. She started moving ahead in about 4th grade and not taking math before 10th isn’t really an option. She’s not a big fan of English or History but will be in Honors English/AP World History next year with 98-100 averages in both this year.

OP, what does your school district require? Can you meet the graduation criteria - it’s usually 4 years of HS math. But if they don’t have courses for you, they can’t really complain. I would suggest taking AP Stats. 80% of the world probably uses what you’ll learn in Stats much more than any calculus you’ll every learn. As you don’t aspire to be a scientist/engineer, MVC isn’t really beneficial. Any college seeing math through Calc BC and AP Stats will care about not having a 4th year, as long as you take a good, rigorous substiture (i.e., don’t take basket weaving instead).

No, Physics isn’t math.

I’d take AP stats junior year (it’ll seem easy) and one discrete math course senior year through dual enrollment (it’s a type of math for computer science).
But no need to take MVC.

@RichInPitt BC in 10th mean she was accelerated in to Algebra 1 in sixth grade. Did she hate math then? IF so, why was she accelerated so quickly. I am curious because my daughter took A1 in sixth and loved math. Then had a couple of not great teachers and started to hate it. We let her take a whole year off and now she is in Calc AB as a junior and loves it again.

@VickiSoCal I think it’s just a phase they’re going through trying to find some identity. Literature and Humanities has always been my strength, and I went through a “phase” where I convinced myself I hated it. It even persisted until the beginning of my Senior year, and I even posted about how much I hated Lit. Being a teenager can lead you to some angsty ideas as you try to find yourself.

Of course, you also bring up a good point regarding teachers and their impact on how students receive a subject. That could very well be the answer. I just thought I’d chime in as I kind of had a similar mindset.
