Please advise on whether or not I should retake the SAT's. Also what do you guys think about my chances to get in HYP, CalTech, MIT, Washington University in St. Louis, and other top colleges. oh btw, I plan to study medicine.
thanks

EDIT: If my scores are good enough, I prefer not to take the SAT's again. I am going to take Physics and US History SAT II in June.

Your stats are great and your scores are fine. You stand as good a chance as anyone of getting into the ivies, and if you don't want to retake the SATs, then don't--you don't need to.

writing is ridiculously easy to prep for. you should be able to raise it to ~750 with ease. retake it. you dont want to have a weak part of an application that might gave adcom's a slight reason to worry about taking you.

generally 2250 is the bench mark people wnat to hit for the ivies. 2200 is still good but take it 1 or 2 more times because brekaing 2300 would look much better (and for SAT's its best composite score so if u break 760 on writing then ur done)

1540????? Are you guys kidding me???? He DEFINITELY should not retake the SAT and doesn't need to at ALL. Colleges put MUCH less weight on the writing section--it is deflating his overall score and it makes it look lower, when in reality his scores are GREAT.

There are so many misguided posts on here about test scores...it's sad. A 31 ACT is in range for HYP, just go to collegeboard.com and see the statistics for yourself.

sure a 31 ACT is in range. but that gives you what? an average chance?

his Ec's and other stats are great too and he will most likely get into ivy or similar caliber schools if he applies.

its up to him though. It depends on what school he wants to go. If he wants to secure his position more it will help. But, his profile is great eitherway and i see him getting into top 5 schools as it is.

I have nearly the same thing =P 800 CR 740 M 650 W though slightly lower and I'm not taking it again. the new writing bit is still a bit of a puzzle...no idea on the day wheter im supposed to come out with a clear concise essay or a creative one or to list out sat words =.='' I figured writing my essay properly, and scoring high CR and English results in school would easily compensate.

And about the low writing... I am actually surpirsed that I got that low. If anything, I thought I would be sub-700 in reading because I usually have great grammar in my English class.

If I do not take the SAT I's again, do you guys think that I can give the admission officers a better understanding of my writing ability with my personal essays? I am not in the mood of taking the SAT's again; then again, Who is?

Again, colleges do NOT give much weight at all to the Writing section. The application essay is a fine place to show off writing skills--and a recommendation from an English teacher will certainly help your case. Don't stress about it. You have great SAT scores.

writing is primarily used for research purposes for most ivies, which translates into not being factored in

its not about the sat; there's just a really low cumulative benchmark score that is used to separate the undesirable candidates from the rest of the pool. Your sats and stats are good enough to pass that first test. Anything further is a crapshoot =)

you're fine. don't waste your time with another sitting; i honestly think that will actually bode worse in your favor even if you get a higher score cuz the adcoms might think you put emphasis on the wrong stuff.

good luck though; you have as good a shot as any other!

CC made me worry too much about test-scores and all that objective crap that does not matter in most admission processes. focus on your essays and how you present yourself so you can give your regional officer a good reason to fight for your entrance.

That 2200 is great; it's above the average for many of the top universities. In addition, you have a 1540 for the most important part. Don't worry about retaking it. (A 2200 and 2300 don't make much of a difference.)
