I really want to go to Cal Berkeley or UCLA but my unweighted GPA, which I have heard colleges consider heavily, seems to be a real downside. I know applications are more than grades and scores but GPA is no doubt one of the most important factors in admissions. Am I utterly hopeless? I'm getting straight A's in my first semester of senior year. Can this help at all? I've never gotten an A in Honors English but am finally getting an A in my AP English class. Can this show significant improvement and help me chances? I'm so worried that I have little to no chance. I am taking one more SAT. Can this redeem me in any way? Please help.

Very few things can redeem a low GPA. Retaking the SAT is not one of those few things.

To redeem a low GPA, you need either a very good reason for the low GPA (some depressing sob story) or an extremely impressive achievement (rank 10 award from this list: <a href=“List of Top, Prestigious Awards - #841 by riffed - High School Life - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/high-school-life/302001-list-of-top-prestigious-awards-p57.html).

Of course, these things are probably not possible for you, so all you can do is rely on luck, and make sure the other parts of your application are very good.
