Is a 3.87 UW GPA Ivy League-competitive?

Mine was 3.7something. I’m going to Stanford. Chillax :)

doooood that’s awesome. do you know why you stood out to them??

please take the comments about 4.0s ruling with a grain of salt … my guess is people are extrapolating from very small data sample sizes and making blanket sizes. Certainly having a 4.0 is better than not but I’d think a 3.87 is well within the hunt.

I referenced the common data set because I was looking for many data points … it’s too bad the top schools do not breakdown the 3.75-4.00 band down further. I do have access to some other data about admits and their GPAS … this is from the Naviance data from my kids HS (a very good public high school in Mass) … not sure how many years this covers (and I’m estimating the numbers from reading a grapgh)

Stanford

 • 80 applicants - 2 acceptences
 • 2 accepts … 3.8 GPA and 3.6 GPA
 • All 5 4.0 GPA candidates were rejected
 • The two accepted students had SATs in the 1500-1550 range (on a 1600 scale)
 • all 4 1550+ SAT scores were rejected (inlcuding a 1600)

Princeton

 • 60 applicants - 10 acceptances
 • 4 4.0 GPAs in the acceptences … a couple 3.9s … a couple 3.8 and and 3.6 and a 3.7
 • About 7 other 4.0 GPAs were rejected
 • 2 of 2 1600 SAT scorers were accepted (one with a 4.0)
 • 8 of the acceptences had at least 1500+ on the SATs
 • There is an accept at about 1475 (with a 4.0 GPA)
 • There is one outlier acceptence with both a low GPA and SAT compared to other admits and lots of other rejects … I assume this person had a heck of a hook

Punchline … Princeton and Stanford are looking for excellent stats however they do not require prefect stats … and you certainly are in the hunt.

PS - as a possible engineer any interest in Cornell where being a female engineer is a hook? (3ToGo Cornell Engineering '81)

Very interesting! This data supported what I though to be the case all along. And yes, I do have an interest in Cornell (but, seeing as they most likely take into account to at least some extent freshman year, my GPA is a 3.71 then. But yup, I’d be elated to get an acceptance from them! It seems as though, no matter the school, sophomore, junior, and 1st term senior years get the most weight.

I wouldn’t be so sure. Even clueless GC’s should have a general idea of where certain types of students end up. This is especially true of top preps, which it seems like (given the rigorous grading) you attend.

I had a 3.94, but my rank was 6/7 (really sal, but lowered by an UW online class I took). That’s why you really need to talk to your GC if your school doesn’t provide rank–she’s the next best thing.

Okay I probably will.

And the school type I attend is public, but supposedly it has a good reputation. I guess it was ranked 3rd in MI for college readiness. It’s definitely noticeably harder than even the other HS in our district (which people joke about because you can take classes at the other school so many people opt to do that)

HOw many AP courses are you taking tho???
like i woul dthink you need at least 8-10 ap courses if your school is so good it probably offers a bunch of them…

I will have taken 8 APs:
APUSH
AP Lang
AP Euro
AP Calc BC
AP Physics
AP Lit
AP Gov
AP French

And 10 Honors:
Bio
English 9
Debate
Geometry
Chem
Algebra II
American Lit
French IV
Physics
Precalc

(this is the most rigorous schedule my school offers)

^ Bio, Geometry, English 9, and Debate are not factored into this GPA (3.87) as they were taken freshman year

@ConcernedDad: just saw your post! Good point about those schools. Only problem would be admission, as I don’t think they have the luxury (for me) of excluding freshman year. They’d see my 3.7…

but did you get all 5’s???

I’ve only taken one AP test - USH. I got a 4 but I’m confident I can get 5s on the one’s I’m about to take this May, as with the ones next year

No AP Chem or AP Bio? That could weigh against you in highly-competitive engineering programs.

Hey, you’ve got a month, just teach yourself and take the AP exams next month!

The deadline to take them passed. :frowning: I could do a summer program…

*sign up for

or, would it be worth it to take Chem instead of French?

if you dont take the ap tests… like the course doesnt even help you at al with admssions… like… wow? ummmm you need like all 5’s i presume to get into a competitive school

oh i know you’re so right like ill prolly have to go to like community college my bad

I seriously doubt that – maybe your school’s “official” deadline has passed, but there are ways…

My son decided last year, one month before the exams, to self-study for 4 tests. He got all of his 8 requested tests at his school in plenty of time.

Chem over French for a tech major? Every time!

You paid for 8 self-study AP tests?! Wow. I don’t know how I’ll sign up though; teachers were on our cases to sign up before the deadline passed like a week ago

hahah geez youre snappy. im just saying… like at my public high school the stuff youre doing isnt abnormal at all… and dont you want to go to an abnormal selective school??? also this is a question more for anyone… how many subject tests are needed for ivies? and like which ones stand out the most?
