I go to a private (costly) school in California, but this spring my single mother was let go of her job. Of course, she filled out a special circumstance form for financial aid, and we both expected to get more scholarships/grants considering our family income dropped significantly. We just got the results yesterday, and she is still expected to take out nearly $20k in loans (which is the same amount she needed to take out originally). I’m still in talks with the school to see if they can give me more money, but I want to know of other options for the fall, or if worse comes to worse, the spring.
Considering the trouble I’ve had with private schools, I’m mostly thinking about transferring to state schools, but if private schools would be easier to deal with, I’m more than willing to consider them too (given they take are willing to give me a break financially).
Obviously, regular transfer applications for fall 2015 were due a year ago, but since my situation is extenuating, do I have a chance in enrolling in a 4 year university – ideally a UC or cal state (specifically SLO) – for the fall? I’ll be a junior in the fall, so community college isn’t really an option. If not, do UCs/Cal States take spring admissions?
It’s upsetting that something so completely out of my control could potentially cause me to be held back for a year, but I’m sure I’m not the only one who has had this happen to, so hopefully there are more options?
