I took the ACT with writing on and I got an 8/12 on the writing. I didn't even try because at my school seniors can take a college level english class but you have to write an essay and it's kind of like the ACT essay because it's 12 points total and there is two graders and they grade on a 1-6 point scale. I took it and got a 6 and then they told me to retake and i got a 6 again and I was really sad because everyone got in except me. (I got a 3 from each grader, one grader had to give you at least a 4). So when I did the ACT writing I felt totally unconfident in myself and didn't even try but i guess i got an 8 somehow. Is my score good? What did you guys get?

8 is alright. Even if some colleges don’t require the writing score or dont consider it; its not that big of a deal.

An 8 really means you wrote a simplistic essay with simplistic language and ideas. Nothing horrible but then again nothing special.

I got a 9 on mine, and i thought i bombed it. I wrote about a man meeting a woman and taking her out on a first date to open my essay.

5-6’s have better control of language with more complex ideas. Think about the black and white issues of a prompt… then apply a higher level analytical question to the prompt. The answer, will head you into a 6 response.

BTW, what were the readers comments on yours?

Son is a great writer and got 11/12. He was mad - wanted a perfect score. 8/12 is not great.

Thank you for boasting ^

I got an 8/12 too and I think that its the threshold that separates bad(1-3) from good(4-6)

I didn’t finish my essay and got an 11… 8/12 is good, but not great. Since now you know what to expect, you could probably bring it up fairly easily.

i got a 9. But I am in eighth grade.

Is neurotic parent around? :)

You can improve your writing score. If you search these forums, there are some great tips for how to do well on the writing section. The graders are looking for certain things in your essays and if you cover all of them in your essay and use the right format, your score should improve.

Also, depending on where you want to attend college, the writing score may/may not matter as much. If you look at the Common Data set for the colleges you’re interested in (just google it for any college) it will tell you what the average writing scores are for admitted students.
