is accounting worth it.

i'm beginning to get bad reviews on accounting. i'm a freshman at a comm college planning to transfer and planning to do a double major in acct & mis and minor in econs. i'm always overall above average in high school but not classified as the best students, but i was known for my competancy in accounting and i really enjoyed it because i always performed well. As at now i've not touched or practiced any thing related to accounting for a while now '7 months' so i'm not really sure about accounting and most especially the salary. i know most people may not have a problem with this but as for me money is part of what matters because my brothers and sisters are studying majors with higher pays (petro eng., med, e.t.c) and i don't want to be out of the league.

pls is accounting really worth it.

incase you need additional info i would post it.

You aren’t capitalizing anything, rexinine, let alone improper nouns. This just shows that you really just don’t care about anything, because it’s not like it’s because of your advanced training in the English Language.

What difference does it make to you is the question?

Business isn’t business without accounting. How do you know how much you made? How do you know how much it costs? How can you quantify what happened? How can you forecast what may happen? How do you make sure you’re not paying too much tax or not enough?

And when it’s time for taxes, audits, and valuation wouldn’t you want someone who specializes in that stuff (A CPA) so you have a better chance of getting it right? That could mean the difference between profit and total loss on an LBO or M&A.

Everyone who does business does accounting. Even drug dealers use accounting when they track inventory, or determine prices based on raw material inputs (COGS), administrative costs, risk, and comparable industry returns. Everyone who does business and isn’t an accountant will use accountants at some point.

So yes accounting is worth it.

  • AND -
No, it isn’t worth it to you. You need to chose a career that you enjoy. If you don’t like what you do you will most likely suck at it and your pay is positively correlated with how bad you suck. If you want to make a lot of money you must follow Bill Gates’ and Warren Buffets advice: Do what you love. Within reason, you may not get rich as a house painter.

you can research salary information yourself. I wouldn’t trust information from articles though, you have to look at the job posting itself. It’s not hard to find job postings with salary range between $30-40k in accounting (bachelor degree required). As I stated in another post, you have recruiting firms driving your wage down and no labor union of any sorts in accounting. Moreover, community colleges are beginning to offer upper level accounting courses as well. Graduate courses cost almost twice as much as undergraduate classes. Tack on the $2000 beckers CPA exam plus the cost of taking each section and time studying and you know the answer. If you ask me, getting $30-40k is an insult as you can make the same amount of money waiting tables. Looking forward, the future of accounting looks dark. If you do get licensed, you might get $45-60k depending on experience, still less than an experienced police officer.

in +
you’ll often read people on this forum saying that accountants earn more than engineers later in life.

that’s a stupid argument. would you rather make $80k+ with only 2 years of experience now as an engineer or wait to make that much (if you’re lucky) later in life.

Who gives a crap what your brothers and sisters are studying/getting paid? Stop comparing yourself to them, and do what’s right for you. Salaries vary depending on geography + type of job (government, corporate, public accounting, etc). Easily middle class, with potential for higher earnings.

I’m sorry, but this is definitely one of the funniest clauses I’ve read in a while.

thanks, maybe i would re-think before making my decision. but johny how many years is it before i am able to make enough cash.
