Is Alienware a good laptop for college?

Is it a good idea if I buy an Alienware m17x with 3D capability?

Is it really impractical to have a 17 inch laptop?

are Alienwares too flashy for college? Like, won't people be tempted to steal em?

no one’s going to steal a 10 pound brick.

you will regret getting such a heavy computer

I was advised to get a netbook, with full windows 7 / Office, to be easily portable and use in class. Is that too small?

I would suggest a smaller computer, like a Macbook, Macbook Pro, or any of the garbage computers that run Windows. Really what is the point to bring an over-sized laptop to college unless your planning on playing games instead of doing your work?

netbooks are probably the best bet if you want to take in-class notes on a computer

i personally prefer to take notes w/ paper&pencil whenever possible, though, because computers often end up being a distraction.

Alienwares aren’t good for anything; I suggest not buying one.

I have 2 friends that just bought Alienware’s last year (pre-college) and really regret it. Those computers are like pounds and come packed with all the top hardware that you will NEVER take advantage of in college (if you’re planning to have a life outside of gaming). Why not just buy a less expensive, more portable, laptop with 1 or 2 levels lower grade hardware that can still run whatever games you’re planning to play on low settings? I would look into standard sized/lightweight laptops. 15" should be the max size, 13" is recommended. I can promise you’ll regret buying an alienware, that will be heavier than your textbooks.

I have a m15 at home and I am definitely not taking it to college it’s sooooo heavy.

I think an alienware, 17inch laptop with 3d capability is a lil bit of an overkill
