Is anyone applying to Illinois Wesleyan University?

Can any prospective students or current students at IWU tell me what student life is at IWU and in Bloomington? I also need help with the essay? What are the top 5 things that make IWU distinct and great? Also, what's the diversity and race relations like? Please respone asap...thanks!

I just applied last month, so i don't know a lot but see if this helps
Diversity
* <1% American Indian/Alaskan Native
* 4% Asian/Pacific Islander
* 7% Black/Non-Hispanic
* 3% Hispanic
* 77% White/Non-Hispanic
* 3% Non-Resident Alien
* 5% Race/ethnicity unreported
Things that make it distinct :
Everything typical in a Liberal Arts College
Very Strong math & bio programs (1rst or 2nd in Midwest)
In the same town as ISU, so lots of shared advantages of a large university
Very personal application process
Good merit scholarships (or so i hear)
stupid one - but currently 1st place mens bball in all of D3
Gateway Colloquia = freshmen mandatory course for writing & discussion
May term = 4 weeks one class
special exchange w/ one of the oxford colleges

As far as the essay goes I'm not sure whether u mean the personal statement of the 1 paragraph specific interest in iwu, but if it is that paragrapgh thing, don't stress, it makes no difference. For personal statement, i know they actually read it, but i think they care more about getting to know you, not grammar

hope this helps
good luck

I'm a sophomore in IWU. I'd be happy to reply to specific questions that you have.

my son was accepted to IW recently and awarded a partial scholarship. Do they award full scholarships? Is there transportation to Champaign/Urbana to catch the Amtrak? Thanks.

First of all, the AMTRAK stops in Bloomington with lots of connections to Chicago and St. Louis, and getting to Champaign is easy because many kids make the trek so he can share a ride.

Second, IWU has the benefits of both a small college and a large university since it is right next to Illinois State University. Which means there are lots of concerts and other activities that large campuses attract that small colleges do not; while your son can get the individual time and attention of a dedicated small college faculty. Also, great DIII Athletics.

Thank you for your response. Actually we live in southern Illinois so my son would have to get to Champaign to catch the Amtrak going south. Do you know anything about the Hillel on campus?

Hello,
My roommate is the senate rep for Hillel, so I know a lil about it. Hillel is pretty active as a group. They had the Hanukkah celebration last semester (btw, the food was awesome) and this semester they are bringing an Jewish artist or something to talk to the campus and also a collection of photos (not sure) about the Holocaust.
