Is anyone besides me considering taking UCLA engineering over Cal engineering?

Since Cal is basically known for its engineering..

I'm trying to decide between Materials Engineering at UCLA and Bioengineering at Cal... am I crazy - because Materials Engineering isn't even ranked at UCLA while Cal's bioengineering is renowned.

Please help T_T or see my other thread -> http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/481498-cal-vs-ucla-vs-ucsd.html#post1060052197

My D chose UCLA over Cal for CS - mostly because she just liked UCLA and its area better than Cal and its area.

Why wouldn't you choose the place with the major you most want to pursue?

Go to Berkeley!

ucsducladad, Materials Engineering was actually my second choice major at UCLA; Bioengineering was my first - I'm just worried that the HUGE difference between the program rankings will hurt me in the future, whether its for job prospects (I'll definitely need to find a good job before applying for Business school) or for business/law school admissions.

Fisico, could you provide a reason please?

Because I flipped a coin, and my Magic 8 Ball agrees.

* Heads = UCLA
Tails = Cal

flips coin

Result: Tails (Cal)

Question: Should hydralisks follow the coin toss?

shakes M8B

Results: Without a doubt.
*

As you can see, the decision was done systematically. Don't fight against fate. What other reasons do you need?

:rolleyes:

Are you sure that the coin was completely symmetrical though? Or else it would've been a biased test :)

There isn't a huge difference in engineering program rankings between Cal and UCLA. Remember that there are thousands of colleges and they're relatively next to each other.

If you're concerned about rankings for bioengineering, did you consider UCSD? It ranks higher than Cal or UCLA for bioengineering.

Regardless, all have very good reputations for their engineering programs and, importantly, all have good recruitment for both internships and jobs. I think you'd do fine at any of them.

If by "symmetrical" you mean "fair" ie. P(Tails)=P(Heads)=1/2, then yes it was a "fair" coin.

i made that decision last year.
i thought about it forever... i applied to Cal under mechanical engineering and UCLA under electrical engineering... i was scared of Cal's EECS... kinda dumb of me lol... since the major i applied for kinda swayed my decision a bit ><

how i thought about it last year
i remember thinkin that i knew i wanted to do EE... i heard it was hard to switch majors at Cal (i didnt think i would get a good enuff gpa to be eligible), so that kinda swayed me to UCLA... i thought about how people at Cal would be more intelligent which would hurt my GPA (still don't know how true that is... and me thinking that i couldn't get a good gpa made me feel like i couldn't switch majors lol...). i liked the UCLA campus/environment a lot more... and i think that helped finalize my decision.

after attending ucla for 2 quarters
I am REALLY happy with my choice. I really love UCLA's environment, the diversity of students (socially), etc. UCLA just feels so much like home to me... I wouldn't want to go anywhere else... i just love the way things are run here and i've met so many cool people and even professors (nachenberg ;]) the ONLY reason i sometimes regret not attending berkeley is because they are rated to be better academically, especially for engineering... they are "ranked" much higher in engineering... but i think... if Cal's ranking was my only reason for attending and UCLA has EVERYTHING else that i love... i'm happy i chose UCLA and hope our rankings improve a bit ;]
or i hope the dumb rankings aren't too important
UCLA ftw!

i chose ucla mechE over berkeley mechE.
i don't think i could have handled the berkeley environment. i HATED the surrounding area. also, since ucla gave me a full ride and berkeley gave me nothing, i was able to live in a double plaza instead of a triple res hall.
i'm pretty high-maintenance so i doubt i could have handled the whole communal bathroom thing...
but really, go to the school that you feel at home at. both ucla and berkeley are wonderful schools, and you'll be fine at either. choose one where you see yourself being happiest :)
