Is anyone else thinking of, uh... (WARNING: BLASPHEMOUS CONTENT INSIDE)

...visiting Harvard during CPW? Is there any rule against it? I know a bunch of you are going to internet-shout at me for thinking about doing this, but I won't be able to make Harvard's prefrosh weekend, and I haven't visited either before. (this is, of course, if I'm accepted to Harvard)

Bleh, Harvard. I hear they have cooties.

If you can tear yourself away from MIT for a chunk of time during CPW, I don’t see a problem with it. :)

someone asked this on the MIT Class of 2013 FB group (was that you?)

I would say sure go ahead, but make sure you shower before coming back onto campus otherwise the wild pack that are MIT students will certainly smell Harvard on you and attack.

:-D

I can understand why someone would post this question here (where you’re anonymous) but WHY would you post this on a FB group? (Hopefully OP wasn’t the one who did)

Anyways, no one is saying you can’t. I wouldn’t trust on getting accurate directions from the MIT kids though LOL

lol, I don’t think there’s nearly as much antagonism between Harvard and MIT kids as there is between say, MIT and Caltech kids. And, Harvard and MIT are separated by about 5-10 minutes. After all, you can even cross-register at the two schools!

Realize that this is college now. MIT can’t forbid you from going off campus. That’s just silly ;). (Of course, there are parental issues if you’re under 18 and want to do something. But I doubt your parents have something moral against Harvard?)

It’s sad that you’ll be torn from CPW for a while. I’d try to visit Harvard at the beginning or end - the middle is where the fun CPW stuff is.

@molliebatmit - Do you have cooties?!

Haha, my harvard friend invited me to live in her dorm for two days on the weekend. If i can tear myself away from the awesomeness that is MIT :)

What! I don’t go to Harvard. What self-respecting MIT alum would go to Harvard?!? MIT is the biggest feeder of students to my PhD program, which clearly indicates that my PhD program could not possibly be at Harvard.

Anyway, it’s only the undergrads who have cooties. Free cootie vaccinations are part of our grad student health plan.

In all seriousness, MIT students don’t hate Harvard students. We just think they’re slackers. ;)

Hey now, I needed to find out whether I needed to start anticootie drugs, that’s all. I think your awesomeness overrides even your darkest flaws (like Harvard).

if any of you are going to Harvard during CPW, contact me

im pretty sure that harvard has their own admits weekend thing…so if you are planning on going to that than there would be no need to visit it during CPW

^ I can’t make it to Harvard’s admitted students weekend since it is during the dates of my school’s spring play.

Secretly, there’s not actually that much antagonism in either case. Most of it is a show.

I’m gonna check out Harvard, but probably on the 15th.
Or if I don’t get in I’ll go over in the middle of the night and do funny things to the John Harvard statue.

I admire goldenratiophi’s audacity at starting such a topic, and I also admire the restraint of the members here for not starting a virtual mudslinging contest. However, jessiehl is also correct.

Why would this be a problem?
Surely, many MIT students had to make the same decision between MIT and Harvard and would be able to empathize!
The MIT/Harvard rivalry isn’t like the Duke/UNC one where people actually seem to legit hate each other… :p

i’ll wager $5 that there will be non-mit and/or non-prefrosh mingling w/ the mit prefrosh at cpw…

Well, I actually think the thing is just that the rivalries are rather one-sided. MIT is all (jokingly, of course) “psh, we’re so much cooler than Harvard,” but Harvard is sort of like, “Hmm, what? Sorry, I was too busy not caring at all.” Then, Caltech sort of started trying to have a rivalry with us by hacking CPW, and we were like “Hmm, what? Aw, dammit, do we really have to take time away from making fun of Harvard to go deal with this?”

That’s my interpretation anyway. =)

Having been there at the time, this is not a bad interpretation. :)

Really, it went more like this:

“**? Caltech’s doing *what? Oh, for crying out loud…”

“Hmm, this cat-and-mouse thing is kind of fun.”

“Okay, this was fun, but it’s getting old quickly, and there are cultural conflicts that nobody seems to get.”

“That website…really, Caltech? Are we in middle school?”

“Maybe we can think of something awesome to do next year involving them.”

[A year later] The cannon shows up in front of 54.

Considering that CPW is on marathon weekend, it might be worth it to try to find a place to stay for a day after CPW, get a good, solid visit at Harvard without all the MIT stuff distracting you, and go watch the marathon, which is pretty cool.
