With my first quarter at Cal Poly SLO as an architecture major ending, I'm as even confused about having chosen the right major than when I first started the quarter. I like architecture and studio isn't too bad, but I'm not sure that design is really my strongest factor so, I don't know if I can do this for another 5 years. I know what I want to do in the future which is build homes for lesser countries abroad and somehow make a career around helping people and the environment. I've been considering switching into architectural engineering or environmental management but I'm not 100% sure still. Should I just stick out this major and work on my design skills or switch?

In the profession of architecture there are many rewarding roles and most do not involve the schematic design of a building. However in school everything revolves around the design studio, and if you are not one of the better designers you will not get a lot of positive reinforcement. The partner I built the firm with struggled in design studio at Rice, but he is very bright and has the ability to get work. He has been very successful.

The question is: can you get through studio to accomplish what you want in the profession? It will only get harder from here. So be very honest with yourself. Did you enjoy spending all those hours in studio with a bunch of architecture majors, or was it a beating? You can get by not being one of the better designers in your class, but if you don’t like what you are doing then go find something else to do.
