Is Baldwin-Wallace conservatory a good choice for voice majors?

I will be majoring in voice next semester in college, either as a voice performance major or double major in voice performance/music therapy with voice primary. I have been accepted at Baldwin Wallace - I really liked the school at first, but now I’m having my doubts. I know that BW is great for musical theater and for instrumental players, but is it a reputable school for vocal performance? I assumed that it was because of their musical theater program - usually musical theater performers would have at least some background in classical music and technique, so I assumed they had a great voice faculty, but I can’t find much about alumni, it’s reputation, etc.

There are very knowledgeable posters about vocal performance in the Music Majors forum. I would repost your question there.

if you can you should visit the school and talk to professors and students if at all possible. i do know somebody who is very interested in applying there for musical theater .(not that helps you with your question)

BW’s MT program is very good, their VP program is not as strong but doesn’t mean that the school might not be the right place for you. The program is smaller and there are no grad students to compete with, but they also have a tendency to do operas that are overly ambitious and without graduate students, young singers can end up taking on roles that might be safer in the hands of an older student. They do Gilbert and Sullivan in the fall, which is always a lot of fun and have a Scenes and a Cabaret program for the freshmen as part of the new curriculum changes that have been developed.
The music building is gorgeous! It’s only 5 years old and there is a wonderful performance hall specifically for vocal music. Campus is easy to navigate but the town is small and isolated, about a half hour drive from Cleveland. If you can get to the school to check it out and can time your visit to correspond with Opera Scenes, do schedule sample lessons with the teachers you interested in and see how you get along. If you have further questions, @graceg6, PM me, and I wish you the best of luck!
