Is basketball an EC?

i was wondering if it is,cuz im not in the school's team, but i devote 6~ hrs per week on it. i've been playing since 7th grade.so is it?

if it's extra-curricular... then yes. so yes.

If you mean other than shooting hoops by yourself in the backyard, then yes. If it's an outside team, club team, whatever, then obviously yes.

If you spend 6 hours a week on it, it is an EC for you. Write it on the application, talk about it in your essay, or put it on your resume if it is an activity that is important to you. With BB, not everyone plays on their HS team as there are other leagues/clubs out there.

If you're not on a club/league/team/organization, then don't bother. And no, you and your parents won't count as a team.

not in an organization =S so do i put it? or if not,im gonna put it in the additional info section?

like do you just hang out with your friends playing basketball a few hours a week? I'm slightly confused....

Go ahead, put it on at the bottom of your EC list. Worst case, the admissions officer is just going to be like "whatever" about it...best case, the officer is going to be like, "okay, so he's pretty passionate about this".

It's not going to make a big difference either way.

Only put it if you're in an organized group. Otherwise, it's no different than me going to the gym every week

Disagree with this, doesn't matter, even if you play for fun just put it down. I really don't think it'll make a big difference unless you mention/reveal it somehow, but eh.

Going to the gym can be a great EC if you present it; lots of people I know have succeeded in that. Virtually anything's an EC.

It doesn't count as an EC, it's not like you're playing for your school's team, or anything. It seems like it's just you and some friends getting together to play come bball.

And no, how would going to the gym be an EC? Not only can you that also be a fallacy, but it's definitely nothing spectacular. A LOT of people go to the gym.

Agreed with Shiomi. Truth is, ANYONE can put down "go to the gym" or "play basketball", thus it is irrelevant. Matter of fact, if you do mention it, it can backfire because then the adcom will think your an idiot whose trying too hard to decorate his/her EC list. Don't do it.

But again- if you go to the gym because your the MANAGER for the gym, or if you play basketball because you contribute to your team/organization, then yes. True, its an EC, but if everyone were to put stuff like that on their app, it would be full of garbage. If you were truly passionate about basketball, you would've joined a recreation team/organization- or maybe your school JV/varsity team. Telling them that you just shoot hoops in your back yard alone doesn't speak well for you.

I wouldn't bother if you have lots of other stuff on there but if it complements your app, go ahead

bull, i play for the love of the game.

Lebronfor2008mvp- again, whether you play the game for the purpose of sticking it on your app or you play the game simply for the love of it is irrelevant. leisure activities are unsubstantiated, thus they will not make a difference on your application. Choosing to put your application or not is entirely up to you, but it would be in your best interest to leave out shooting hoops in the back yard out. The OP does not specify whether he devotes 6 hrs per week on a outside organization, every post-including this one- is entirely hypothetical.
