My son received a Congressional nomination to the Naval Academy and now we are waiting to see if he will be admitted.

For the past 18 months my son has chosen a meatless diet. He eats plenty of eggs, and is good with cheese and the occasional seafood, but no beef, chicken, or pork.

I have told him that if he gets admitted to USNA he will need to go back to being a carnivore. Am I right in this?

Also, do plebes get to have any food "stash" in their rooms? (i.e. Powerbars, peanut butter, anything?).

Thanks for your insights!

While I doubt that it is possible to be a true vegitarian at USNA (my plebe on summer break is busy so I can’t ask him) I will let others anser that question.

From personal experience from sending several packages throughout Plebe Summer and the Ac year I can tell you tho that plebes can have snack items in their room. Putting them in a tight-locking plastic box is recommended, unless he likes sharing his stash with mice. Anything that needs preparing, such as Cup-O-Noodles, depends on the company.

It’s definitely possible to follow a vegetarian diet at USNA. All the meals have vegetarian options, either served at the tables or out of the diet kitchen. I know specifically of a youngster in my company who is a strict vegetarian and he gets along fine.

As far as care packages go, I’ve seen mids get just about everything. Just remember that refrigeration may be difficult (at least for plebes) and that there really isn’t that much room in one’s locker for food storage. Also, sending food in tough plastic containers helps with organization and general cleanliness.

I appreciate the insights offered.

FYI-
the academy is undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation of the kitchen. It will be housed in a new building that is currently under construction next to Kings Hall.

Here is the really good news… there will even be a new “food court” available to Mids on weekends!
