Does being an Asian (Indian) ethnicity but American be considered as URM? Or is it relative to the college?
Also, if a student attending a foreign HS where in its history has none of its students placed at US universities or outside the foreign country itself be an advantage to the applicant?
Alright, now I can draw a generalized conclusion that schools which have an extremely low composition of Indians or schools in states which are not ‘infiltrated’ heavily by them, the applicant could be a potential URM at those places. This seems places like New England, Midwest, the Dakotas and surrounding states.
Not New England. In most colleges across the country, Asian/Indian is ORM. Especially in large competitive universities. In some more remote colleges, not ORM.
Look at liberal arts colleges. Probably not a URM at the handful at the tippy top, but could be below that. If you Google the Common Data Set for a given school, you can see an ethnicity breakdown in it.
Basically, URM means under represented, which for Asians would mean under 7% at a given college.
The opposite is over represented, which is anywhere 14%+ or so (ie., More than double the national representation).
Also, my custodial parent attended a non-US grad school and non custodial parent a grad school in US. Am I a first generation college student? I have this doubt as one parent went to grad school outside the US and the other is my non custodial one and I think he won’t be factored in. Is it wrong?
There is no universal answer to first gen status, but usually it doesn’t differentiate between custodial and noncustodial parents so most likely you will not be considered first gen.
It normally pertains to either parent having graduated from a 4 year college. Sometimes they only consider graduation from a U.S. institution.
Generally, if one of your parents is a college graduate (and the location doesn’t matter) you are not considered first generation. Your dad is a college graduate. You are not first generation.
I don’t think you are first genearation student going to college. Both of your parents have college degrees.
@MYOS1634 and @GuessME5, among six New England states, Maine has the least number of Indian population, followed by Vermont and RI. NH has a good number. MA and CT are as populated as CA.
