What ethnicity qualifies you as a URM? I've seen people in other threads say that being Bengali (from Bengladesh) gives you URM status.

tradionally:
Native American,African American, Hispanic, East Indian.

Many schools may actually have different criteria as to what counts as urm. For example I believe I believe if you're 1/2 african american, i.e. one of your parents was african american, then you can put down you are african american. Also depending on the demographic of the school your applying, you may be a urm when tradionally you may not have been. For example when I was applying to colleges, I was considered a URM at Bowdoin, a small liberal arts college that is about 60% white, even though I am Indian and an ORM.

I'm not even sure what Pakistani would count as. I suppose they lump that in with Indian? I'm just curious. I was surprised that Bengali was considered URM.

The ones that are almost always accepted as URM: hispanic, black, native american

Some schools that have a very high Caucasian percentage will have Asian URMs including Chinese/Korean/Japanese. Boston College is one of these schools.

East Indian is URM?! I always thought it was bad.

Is Filipino URM or lumped in with Asian?

Filipino counts as pacific islander, which is a good thing.

Oh, cool. Good for me then.

Would Indonesian count as URM?

deeeeeeeeeeeefinitely not. i'm indonesian.

Look for the latest "'Race' in College Admission FAQ & Discussion" thread for up-to-date links to federal definitions of race categories and other information. Most colleges are vague about what groups constitute "underrepresented" groups at the colleges. People from Bangladesh, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Indonesia are all Asian people by the current federal definitions.
