I know it's not as good as being in the top 5, 10 or 15% But at a highly competitive school is that considered good? (In a class of 550+).

Some people here on CC will probably tell you otherwise, but personally I think it’s pretty good. Obviously being up in the top 5% is better, but depending on what colleges you’re looking at top 25% could be really competitive. Especially with a class so large.

I’m sure you’ll get into college somewhere great and have the time of your life. Good luck!

I think it’s good enough that it won’t disqaulify you from all but Ivies (unless you are legacy, athlete, etc) and other schools, including very selective, will look at your grades/SATs.

bumpppp. 10char

Where do you want to apply?

I suppose it depends on your SATs. But I will say its pretty okay ;D

im in the top 11% ,and i want to go to johns hopkins.do you think it’s going to significantly hurt me???

^ autoreject.

Does your school weight for more difficult classes and rerank people or is this your weighted rank?

^i know you are not asking me lol
mine is weighted rank.

^Personally, I don’t think it will be an issue.

bumpppppppppp

When people say that it won’t count you out of the ivies if you’re top 25% or wtv… i really don’t think they’ve seen the numbers. every ivy boasts 90%, and more 95% + of who are ranked in the top 10% of their graduating class

^^but the OP is an URM so things change a bit in terms of competing with other URM

Its not bad, but not good. So I guess that means its OK aka avg. So yeah ur fine for avg schools, not HYPSM.

Depends what you mean by “good.”

Objectively, it’s obviously good — you’re better than >75% of the students in your class. For most colleges, that’s plenty.

For top colleges, it’s definitely bad. Very few admits are outside the top 10%.

It really depends on what type of school you attend. Do you attend a Magnet or college prep school… or a school that requires testing to get in? And, really, it really depends on the number of kids in your class. If you attend one of the special schools mentioned before, meaning your class is probably smaller than the typical one, that’s not bad. <—In a case you fall in that category, you still have a shot at HYPSM. There’s also the GPA factor. Even if you’re within the top 25% at a normal school, your GPA could be 4.3~4.5.

better than the other 75%

yummymango: How could your GPA be 4.3–4.5? The highest GPA is a 4.0…

You’re mistaken: the smaller the class size, the less impressive a low rank.

i would think its the other way around kameronsmith

Yea, you’d think so but it’s actually not.

If you look at some primary sources (ex. Michele Hernandez) they all rate class rank as less important & impressive at smaller institutions. So, 25% in a small class won’t be very impressive, but it also won’t matter too much. For really small classes, they tend to just throw out class rank and look at GPA.
